CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Panthers on Tuesday signed former French bobsledder and NFL Europa standout linebacker Philippe Gardent.

Gardent joins the Panthers after five seasons in NFL Europa, including the last three with the Cologne Centurions.

The 6-1, 240-pound Gardent had 77 tackles and one sack in 2007 to help the Centurions finish first in the league in total defense. He was recognized on the All-NFL Europa League team for the second consecutive year and was named the NFL Europa League National Player of the Week twice.

In 2006, Gardent ranked first on Cologne with 70 tackles and one sack. Gardent then signed with the Washington Commanders and spent the 2006 season on their practice squad.

Before his NFL Europa career, Gardent was a competitive downhill skier and was later a member of the French national bobsled team.

Carolina could exceed the 80-player roster limit for training camp after receiving seven roster exemptions for NFL Europa players.
