The single hardest thing for me to do with the Cowboys and NFL in general is not let the money get in the way. Compare the player to what he was paid and is now being paid as if that has any bearing on his ability, desire or talent.

One of the dumbest things this owner ever said was right after Romo signed his last contract, he expected him to play better because he was getting paid better. It was just his way of excusing to those that thought he might have overpaid. What he should have spent more time on was that he had increased the QB's responsibilities with the installation of the game plan on Tuesday's.

We saw that happen just this past season with Elliott, Lawrence and Smith, great for what they were making and unacceptable at their new salary and nothing really had changed except the money. They didn't start playing less than before, they were just making more money. Just look at the criticism all 3 have received and I watched all 3 play as hard as they could. Not one of them was guilty of playing for a contract. I've seen that but not from these 3 and I do not think I will see that from these next 3, should they be able to keep all 3 of them.

Here's where my Pollyanna pigtails grow and get blonder, I really do believe once 99% of these guys hit the field and get to hitting, the money is gone. They're competing man to man with another and in the battle with their teammates. They don't have time to think about money, they're being televised and in front of family in their own battle.

So, now we get Prescott, Cooper and Jones, the top 3 out of this FA class and the expectations are already jacked just because they're up for new deals. They must perform better to earn that money in our eyes. We also spend far too much time on the money and cap part of it anyway.

It's just human nature. When I gave people raises, I expected more out of them and should someone really push me hard for more than I had anticipated, well, the expectations were unreal. And I learned, that was just wrong. The money didn't change them and it didn't make them any better, just changed my expectations.

So, I think it would behoove us to try and keep the money out of it and just judge the player's play and not his pay. I know it's hard, it's hard for me too, but I need to keep that in mind when watching them play and forming opinions and judgments about them. If Prescott throws a bad pass, Cooper has a drop or Jones gives up a big play, there really is no $ value attached to that anymore than when they make a good play.

I agree with the sentiment, but if the player gets paid such an exorbitant amount that it stifles the team's ability to sign other quality players, then I think that player has a responsibility to earn his paycheck.

I'm not referring to anyone specific, just generally speaking.

nah not one contract in Sports history has been lived up to these guys are making over 1million A GAME and much MORE..you cant live up to that as the working man or common employee out in the worlds will never understand it because its ridiculous.. it just so happens these players are making the owners much more money and want their piece..

I havent seen one player worth 2million a game, how about soon 3million for Mahomes for playing ONE GAME, ONE HOUR of Field time per week? how can they possible live up to that ie EARN IT..

like the OP said all they can do is work hard and be close to what they've always been, not better, its nearly impossible and thats the expectations that gets all the bs posts atrted..

besides its out of fans hands and money shouldnt matter, since when do contracts become part of what we watch? we simply root for the team wearing the star and the colors, what they make shouldnt triggers such emotional responses but the SM and oversaturation of sports data has crated this monster..i blame sports betting, fantasy football and the media for aiding in this..

I agree, it shouldn't trigger anyone, nor should their social media crap. Until I joined an online fan forum, I never even thought about how much money they make, in comparison to anyone else on the team. It's not something I control, and it doesn't affect me in any way. But just because I don't get triggered or even care that much, it doesn't mean I don't still have an opinion.

When I say earn his paycheck, I mean, for example, if a RB gets paid a 20th of the salary cap money, he shouldn't be a 30th of the offensive production. (Again, not thinking of anyone specific or using specific numbers, just giving an example.)

I don't see how some of them can earn that if they've been overpaid.

We tend to put the cap management on the player like he is knowingly taking money away from another. I look at it a little differently, I never put it on the player, it's always on the guy writing the check. They didn't have to do that deal.

Prescott is likely to make 10 times what he's been making from the Cowboys, he had his best year yet. Is he going to be 10x better than that?

I think if Smith hadn't had that new deal and Elliott not held out to get his or Lawrence not held off on his surgery to apply leverage, we're not as critical of any of the 3. We apply business dealings to on the field and they're two different animals.

I don't see how a player wouldn't know that the more money he gets, the less there is to go around...but I agree, it's still on the guy writing the check to determine whether or not the player is worth it.

Prescott has been severely underpaid for what he's done, so yes, he's probably multiple times better than his paychecks have been. 10x? IDK.

I think Smith and Lawrence should drop that stupid nickname, and neither seem to give a particularly good interview, but other than that I like them.

I have never cared how much a player got paid until the salary cap.
