The Cowboys saw players they liked come off the board in round 2, max unger was their target at 51 and traded out of day one. They were busy on day 2, starting with OLB Jason Williams, who has the athleticism and blitzing ability to fit as a nickel backer, but he must play stronger and hone his instincts. A college right tackle, Robert Brewster projects inside where depth is needed. He is a hard worker who started in 50 games. QB McGee is a player to watch with intangibles, leadership, toughness and the mobility to move behind a heavy O-line. Victor Butler & Brandon Williams are development nickel rushers.
Butler might be more polished, but Williams has more upside. DeAngelo Smith is a press zone corner who isnt terribly atheletic and college teammate Mike Mickens has a great nose for the ball, but doesnt run fast (i think they are forgeting here that mickens had a knee injury and ran like 4.41 his sophmore yr) and needs to stay healthy. Michael Hamlin is rangy and could play either safety spot. He mgiht be better in the box. David Buehler has NFL leg strength and will be a kickoff speciallist, with Nick Folk rarely driving touchbacks. Stephen Hodge is a bulked up hitter but must make it on special teams. TE John Phillips is a solid blocker who does a little of everything. Manuel Johnson was overshadowed at Oklahoma and has tiny hands, but he showed big play abiilty.

You know, it amazes me how some people (Cowboy fans mainly) go right out and slam the Cowboys for what they did in this past draft. Due to the trade for Roy Williams, the Cowboys did not even have a pick in the top 50. If the Cowboys were to move up significantly, then that would mean most likely giving up a 2010 pick. That is something the Cowboys just didn't want to do. I didn't want that either.

I was pretty much relegated to the fact that the Cowboys were going to address what they could in the later rounds. That primarily means special teams.

We will not know how this draft went for a couple of years. I am though going out on a limb and predict that the 2009 draft will be more productive than 2004 or 2006 (which had several first day picks each).

The Cowboys special teams were pathetic to say the least. So we will see what Joe DeCamillias can do for the Cowboys (once he is back and in full health of course).
