I disagree. No teams opinion Of a player will change based on what jerry says in the media, i agree with that. What could change are teams thinking they have to move ahead of us to get a qb.

I suppose we are looking at it from different perspectives. I am looking at it like Jerry is telling the truth and his actually announcing it (as opposed to sitting on it) is part of the "smokescreen".

Whereas you are looking at it as Jerry is lying in hopes that no one will jump over him and remove yet another QB from the board. I find it highly unlikely that anyone would fall for this and let it affect their planning, but I can certainly agree that there's nothing to be gained by Jerry revealing his draft strategy... or at least his actual draft strategy.

I don't think so because it was not something that was really expected.
It was one of those draft day things that happen although people don't think it will happen
One of those players who fell but people did not think they would ala Rogers.

Most people did not expect him to fall to where dallas was and I don't think Jerry expected it.

I think he really did want him because he could see the money and IMO Jerry seen Johnny as a "Wow" player like he loves.

Now some of the stories about him trying to turn in the card and them holding him back sounds like BS...but there is no doubt in my mind that he wanted Johnny even though he knew better and he let the others
over rule him ONLY because he knew in the back of his mind they were right not to trust Johnny.

The only thing I can think is, Jerry saw value of JF at 16 and may not see the same value of any of the top 3 QBs at 4 (unlike many on this board).

I hope I'm wrong but I'm preparing for disappointment :(

I can only assume that - “I think Romo is going to be our quarterback for four or five years,” he said. “And we’ll make all decisions accordingly.” - means no QB at 4.

I also "think" it means Jerry sorta runs the show.

He listens to his son and his scouts. Sure SJones has just as much pull on those decisions as his dad.

One has to wonder...who is really the apple of their eye if it is a defensive player.

I think there has to be one player that they covet on Defense that would preclude them from taking Goff or Wentz if they are there.

Say...Ramsey, Bosa or Jack

I will be interested in seeing the war cam this year to see if someone takes one of those players before them and watch their reactions.

Now this is all speculation on my part, heck it is on all of our parts...but I think that is what is going on.

I think they have a defensive player in mind that would, in their minds, trump the QBs but if that player is gone they might go with one of the QBs.

I think it's both Bosa and Ramsey. If those two are gone when we pick, then we'll go QB (which isn't likely). I think Dallas covets the impact defensive player first and those two seem to be universally considered the best of that bunch. However, since that's only according to the draft experts, it could be someone else.

I'm thinking/hoping that they are just trying to throw people off from what they want to do.

So hopefully they really don't believe our count on Romo going another 4-5 years and are just saying that to throw other teams off their scent.

I don't know if Jerry really thinks Romo has 4-5 years left, but I do think he believes he has at least 2-3 years. Him believing Romo can be productive and win big for us for even a couple of years likely means he'll be in his typical 'win now' mode and want a player at another position who can start immediately rather than use a top 5 pick on someone he believes would sit the bench for at least 2-3 years.

I think they'd have to be blown away with a QB prospect to make that kind of investment and I don't think they are blown away with Wentz or Goff. It's fine to pass on a QB if we really don't see them as a franchise caliber player. But I don't want the thinking that Romo has several more years to influence the decision, but I think it will. If we pass on a QB due to evaluations then fine, but I really hope we don't then turn around and use a 2nd or 3rd round pick in a deep draft on a lesser rated QB, but that's what I'm afraid will happen. There are way too many quality DL, DB's, RB, WR in the 2nd-3rd range that I'd rather take than a 2nd/3rd tier QB who has graded out lower than Wentz/Goff/Lynch.

I know Stephen has been more involved recently, but I agree when it comes to high level decisions like a top 5 draft pick and HC Jerry is still going to be the final vote.

And at QB, Jerry has clearly put all his eggs in the Romo basket. That's been evident for awhile now, from having Stephen McGee being the only QB we've drafted in over a decade to the long term extension he gave Romo a few years ago. At this point I think Jerry's age also factors into it. He has always been short-sighted and now that Romo is nearing the end and Jerry is entering his mid 70's I think he'll definitely be in 'win now' mode with this draft pick and go with the more immediate starter while trying to ride the Romo train for a few more years.

In the end though I think we'll just see more of the same. Romo has only won 2 wildcard games in his career. Now that he's aging and coming off a major injury we're doubling down and going to hope another starter on defense is the missing piece with Jason 'clap clap' Garrett as HC.

“What is the one unequivocal fact that you can count on, relative to the preparation of this draft and on draft day, is that I’m planning on Romo being the quarterback for the next four or five years,” Jones said. “That’s a fact. You won’t see a decision on draft day that will fly in the face of not believing, from our standpoint, that he’ll be our quarterback for four or five years.”

Me too..

Romo is falling apart, we have a top 5 pick, and they are telling us Romo has 4 or 5 more years left.

I think what they end up doing is taking a QB later on and we are all left underwhelmed.

I'm thinking/hoping that they are just trying to throw people off from what they want to do.

I remember that they never brought in Terence Newman for a visit and barely spoke to him when he was drafted 4th overall in 2003.

So hopefully they really don't believe our count on Romo going another 4-5 years and are just saying that to throw other teams off their scent.

I think Jerry's ego will never allow anyone to make decisions that he doesn't approve and get credit for. He wants all the credit for any success that the team might have .

If you are going to put quotes from Jerry Jones in the thread, you are going to need to pass out the decoder rings to the readers.

Draft show mentioned (I think it was KT) that 21 of starting 32 QBs in NFL were drafted in 1st round. Lets not get cute here and think the Cowboys have pixie dust that gives them insight into drafting franchise QB outside of 1st round.

If Jerry Jones is good for one thing in the lead up to the draft, it's telegraphing our intentions through Jerryspeak.

We're also good for generally looking to the draft to replace guys who are due for big pay increases or have big contracts that are expiring in a year or two's time (Carr -> Jones?).

I think you'll see us take an OT higher than normal to replace Doug Free at some point if its not already Chaz Green.

I also think you'll see us take a WR like Doctson. Someone is going to give Terrance Williams huge dollars on the open market in a year. We'd rather have a guy waiting in the wings to take his spot. Obviously if Williams signs a team-friendly deal ahead of time - great! Now we have a logjam of awesome receivers to use.

Follow the money, and listen to Jerry. With this, I'd be shocked if we took a QB at #4. Jalen Ramsey is much more likely.

Sounds to me like Romo is on life support and they are going to call the priest in. You know how Jerry lies at draft time.

They were gonna chuck a second rounder on Dalton a few years ago. I certainly think the top 3 have more upside than Dalton.

This, the near Manziel pick and S. Jones comments give me some hope that they will think beyond this year and Romo.

If anything , I have found that Jerry tells the truth on many of his opinions on the draft. I don't see the smoke and mirrors that so many claim. Every year he makes statements that redraft board proves correct.
