Before 1979 "roughing the passer" was practically limited to aggravated assault. Half the QB's wore protective vests during the game due to some rib injury. The other half wore knee braces to protect what they had left to join the thigh and calf.

Goodell is a Giants fan, right? When that technique starts sidelining some gnats players, only then will it get the attention it deserves.

No professional sport treats its rule book like a lab experiment more than the NFL. Only the NFL can make the act of catching the football more complex than the explanation for splitting the atom.

It's vague on purpose. Very useful. The fewer fans understand it the better.

NFL enjoys lots of vague judgment calls, obtuse exceptions, etc.

Refs need their ability to flex and flow with the money without too much scrutiny.
