Small setup. My girlfriend just graduated from college, so her family is in town for all the festivities. They all decide they are gonna head up to the bar after the Graduation ceremony to celebrate. I'm not a drinker at all, and I really can't stand the bar scene (unless I'm bartending), and she has a little brother that is 17, so I stayed behind to hang out with the little brother while everyone else went out. This conversation happened.

Me: *browsing around Cowboyszone, reading random threads*
Him: "The 30 Yard Slant??"
Me: *sigh* "yeah"
The 17 year old kid whose played about 45 minutes of football total in his life: Isn't that a post?"
Me::lmao2::lmao2::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao2:

Sorry 30, you know I love ya man.

That's the funniest conversation you've been in in a very long time?

~whistles~

Damn.

:laugh2:

I give 30 a ton of credit for the username change to that. It really showed his willingness to laugh at himself. Something a lot of people can't do.

I'm guessing you don't know all the backstory, but it's hilarious if you do. The old timers around here will get it.

I started to see him in a whole new light when he did that... self-deprecating humor carries a lot of weight with me... I like people who don't take themselves too seriously...

As I recall, Brad Sham actually did refer to the play in question as a "deep slant" during one interview. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the specific interview.

Don't misunderstand me here. I'm not arguing the correctness of the terminology. I'm just offering an observation.

I don't know the backstory...but I still find it funny . LOL

Once upon a time, 30 Yard Slant was known as HeavyHitta, and he caught a lot of flak for referring to a "30 yard slant" in one of his posts... for a while there, he tried to defend that phrasing, and caught a ton of heat for it... he was ganged up on pretty good (IIRC, I actually played rather a small role in that, as surprising as that might be to some), but he hung in there... eventually, though, he came to see the error of his ways, and I guess as sort of a comic mea culpa, he adopted his current nom de plume...

Now you know the backstory, at least, the condensed version... being honest, I think he was looking for a fresh start, and if that's the case, his new name was inspired... we were laughing at him, then he was laughing at himself, and before you knew it, it had all blown over...

Well, except that it's a permanent part of Zone Mythology now... I'm kind of jealous about that, I don't think I've ever done anything that will be part of Zone Mythology... :D

I always remember that awesome cartoon bear you used to have.

Classic moment. Will never forget it. One machine ate another.

I still use it on two other forums, but I don't think they ever let me use it in here... maybe I'm getting forgetful in my senior years, was there a time when animated gifs were allowed in here??

That avatar was made by a poster named Pappyman... I searched and searched, and found that cartoon bear, but he wasn't dressed in blue and gray... then I found that flashing star gif... so Pappy took the bear and changed the color on his clothes to something more suitable for a Cowboys fan, and superimposed the bear on that flashing star...

I thought it looked really good, so I appreciate your remembering it, and commenting on it... that bear had a kind of "in your face" look about him that I thought was representative of my posting style...

Pappyman, wherever you are, you're a genius when it comes to working with gifs...

You can't use it as an avatar or in your .sig, (something that repeats with every post) but you can post it in post. So, post it here. :)

OK, how do I attach a gif to a post in here?? I see where I can link to a URL, but this gif is saved on my hard drive...

I thought you had it visible on other websites? Right click on the image there and copy the URL. Then post it here using that URL.

Click the img icon which is in the toolbar. It'll work as long as it is hosted somewhere and had a URL.
