Inside Fantasy Football
Before you draft, remember these names

With countless fantasy drafts and auctions taking place in the coming days, it's never a bad idea to throw out a few last-minute names to consider during those final few rounds when your brain has become numb from the insanity. So here we go:

Mewelde Moore, RB, Minnesota: Now that was fast. Just last week, I was writing in this space about what a great sleeper Moore made because starter Michael Bennett was sure to get hurt this season. Well, Bennett can't even make it out of training camp, apparently, because he's now sidelined with a sore neck, and Vikings coach Mike Tice went so far this week as to say that Bennett is doubtful for the season opener Sept. 11 against Tampa Bay.

With Onterrio Smith on, uh, sabbatical, rookie Ciatrick Fason sidelined with an ankle sprain and veteran Moe Williams no longer an option as the every-down back, Moore has solidified the No. 1 spot for at least the next few weeks. Better yet, he's leading the team with 86 rushing yards on 11 carries and a receiving touchdown this preseason. Perhaps most importantly he's won over the coaching staff with his hard work behind the scenes, improving dramatically in his blocking and pass protection, something they've harped on Moore about in the past.

Kevin Curtis, WR, Rams: Brandon Stokley proved in 2004 that you don't have to be one of your team's top two receivers on the depth chart to have a fantasy impact. While it helps to be in an offense with Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, there's at least one other third-string wideout who could be a real fantasy factor in 2005.

Curtis started running wild during the 2004 playoffs, and he hasn't stopped since, racking up 127 yards and two scores during last weekend's preseason game. Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce are still the two top WRs on the Rams' depth chart, but it's impossible to deny the chemistry between Curtis and St. Louis QB Marc Bulger. The Rams have the easiest fantasy schedule in the NFL this year and have never been shy about throwing the ball.

Mike Anderson, RB, Broncos: Sir, yes, Sir! The former Marine is refusing to let Tatum Bell pass him on the depth chart, and it's almost a lock now that Anderson will be the Week 1 starter in Denver. Yet he'll likely go later than Bell in drafts and should come much cheaper in auctions.

The fantasy savvy will remember Anderson's incredible rookie season in 2000 (1,487 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns) and that whoever gets the bulk of the work in Denver's RB system will be a fantasy star.

Obviously if you take Anderson with the plan to make him a starter you'd better find a way to get Bell, Quentin Griffin and maybe even Ron Dayne, because you never know with Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. He lives to infuriate fantasy football owners.

Ryan Moats, RB, Eagles: Like starter Brian Westbrook, Moats isn't big -- he stands 5-foot-8 and weighs 210 lbs. -- but he's a savvy, shifty runner with good speed and has looked outstanding so far in the preseason. Now that veteran Correll Buckhalter has gone down for yet another season thanks to his failing knees, Moats suddenly finds himself one Westbrook injury away from starting.

Granted, the Eagles are rumored to be looking to bring in a veteran back (can you say Dorsey Levens, boys and girls?) before the regular season starts, but if Moats can hold off fellow youngster Reno Mahe for the No. 2 spot behind Westbrook, his draft value should soar. Remember that Westbrook is hardly the picture of perfect health himself, and that any back who plays in Philadelphia's offense is going to put up great yardage numbers.

Hot Box
Pick him up: Joey Harrington, QB, Lions. No, this is not a misprint. I'm actually recommending you take a chance on Harrington this year. For heaven's sake don't draft him as your starter, but he's looked good enough this preseason (14-of-15 passing in his first two games) to merit a roster spot just in case he starts using all that fantasy talent around him in Detroit.

Sit him down: Antonio Bryant, WR, Browns. Throw out his 15-catch, 246-yard, four-TD effort in Weeks 12-13 last year and the true Bryant is revealed. Yes, he's looked great in training camp, but you've got to be kidding me if you think this guy is going to be anything more than fantasy fodder. Unless you think Trent Dilfer is going to morph into Joe Montana, don't waste your breath calling out Bryant's name at your draft.

Keep an eye on: Fred Taylor, RB, Jaguars. Call him Fragile Freddy, Fraud Taylor or whatever else you want. The guy is still one of the more talented running backs in the NFL when he's healthy. And it looks like his return from offseason knee surgery is going far better than expected.
