The Arborist
I am sure he knew he couldn't cut it completely near the base or he would go flying so he probably cut most (but not quite all) of the tree near the base, then cut further up the tree to weaken the hold on the sod/dirt around the stump so the additional pressure would pull and break the last part near the base. If he ended up cutting it completely further up the tree and it did not break at the mostly-cut area of the base, he could have then cut the remaining part of the short stump to achieve the same result. In other words, I believe the way he cut it was intentional.Darwin.... Man was damn lucky....

Oh definitely .. that guy probably does it for a living so he knows a lot of tactics/tricks like that.I believe that too, I just think how he did it was very dangerous. Several definitely possible outcomes of that tree breaking lose could have easily put him in the hospital. It looked like it almost smashed his leg when it broke free.
The indomitable human spirit has always found ways around obstacles, even while having fun.The Real Skater
And this is why he's called what he is...An Aborist. Although a magician would be more appropiate.Oh definitely .. that guy probably does it for a living so he knows a lot of tactics/tricks like that.
If he didn't know what he was doing, it could have ended up in the Funny Image... never mind.Oh definitely .. that guy probably does it for a living so he knows a lot of tactics/tricks like that.
Looked very close to getting a good kickback.I believe that too, I just think how he did it was very dangerous. Several definitely possible outcomes of that tree breaking lose could have easily put him in the hospital. It looked like it almost smashed his leg when it broke free.
