We tried that before in a draft I believe we took 3, cant remember their names because they all washed out for various reasons,, I get the concept of mass targeting, but it doesn't have a good track record.

It's hit and miss. We loaded up on defensive linemen in Parcells' first year and got a great group (Ware, Spears, Canty, Ratliff). I can't make that the standard nor the year the strategy failed when we took Goodrich, Larrimore and Edwards. That year should have turned out better based on where we drafted them. That's the primary issue with drafting, not quantity. The number of picks you hit on in the later rounds is low, so if we drafted a bunch of corners from the fourth round on, we wouldn't hit on many based on percentages.

Excluding last year because it's too soon to tell, we hit on 2 of 6 picks in 2019 from the fourth round on, 3 of 6 in 2018, 2 of 6 in 2017, 3 of 6 in 2016 and 2 of 5 in 2015. And by hit, I mean either a starter or true contributor (not just a player we stuck out there for a few games hoping they would contribute).

That's why some are for packaging those later-round picks to trade up, but my thought process is that you are going to miss out on those two or three players and you could still end up with busts in the first three rounds. Take your shots understanding that most of these players who last until the fourth round and beyond are not going to make it in the league.

It's going to be interesting to see how a year off not only affects players like him but also the college players who decided to sit out a year, especially if the players decide to not show up for workouts. I think we'll not only see a lot of rust but also a lot of soft tissue injuries.

Agreed, and that's where trenches are usually best. It's hard to reach for oline. See Zach Martin and Frederick. Even in potential "reaches" for oline, they're as safe of a pick as you can make. Given the strides that the WFT and NYG have made at dline, maintaining our oline is as much a priority as defence imo.

Exactly. We need to address BOTH trenches this draft. Fix the dline and maintain our oline. That's the most important parts of the team to fix as well as safety and CB. We're at our best when our trenches are at their best, especially at oline. Strengthen the oline, and Zeke will be back to rookie year form and Dak will be even more dangerous than ever. Most importantly, our d will be on the field less. That was why Murray and Romo were at their best in 2014.

I agree, but I like the 4 CBs I took. Thomas, Bynum, and the OU CB I took are solid options at CB. Hall at round 7 was my best available option imo. That was why I chose the 4 CBs.

Thankies, I just hope Jerry can see this point. Steele did a valiant job filling in for an UDFA. However, the way I see it, part of the reason we were good was because Parnell and Free were able to rotate and compliment each other. When Free was missing, Parnell could fill in. So, we're in okay shape if Collins has to miss time because Steele proved to be a Parnell. Not an every game starter, but can start a few games if needed. The problem is, in 2014, Tyron Smith was right about at his best. 2014-2016 were the best we got out of T Smith. He's still excellent IF he's on the field. Sadly, that's becoming more of an IF than a WHEN. I know we signed someone that can potentially fill in, but the guy we signed is 35. That's NOT a replacement for T Smith. Sewell WOULD be. Imo, Sewell is a very similar style player to Tyron, and I think he would be in a great position to learn from Tyron and, when on the field, would be the plow that T Smith used to be. When he's not starting at T, we could have him at LG or RG. Mind you, Zach Martin's starting to show some wear too. So, we'll probably be in for drafting a guard next year or the year after to prepare for Zach's demise.

So, right now is the time to draft maintenance for our oline. Don't wait and let Dak get beat up like Romo did. Romo had a nice oline until about 2008. Between 2008-2010, our oline was AWFUL, and 2011 was slightly improved because Smith was drafted. It didn't really kick into gear though until 2013. And then we wondered why Romo became "injury prone". Dak's already gotten a serious injury. If we're not careful, Dak's going to see more of this I'm afraid if we don't maintain our oline. I know he's tough, but we can't just rely on that. Also, Zeke's still a solid player, but our oline was such a mess, and we wondered why Zeke struggled?
