Future Safeties

Then he lost it overnight. I think a combination of gaining weight, and subsequently slowing down, coupled with a lack of desire lead to decreased production big time. I think he's a shadow of what he was. Shame, he could have had a Hall of Fame career and lost it.
You are 100% correct.

Nah.

A corner will be drafted before a safety.

If some of the underclassmen expected to declare early actually declares, the upcoming draft should be loaded w/ players at both positions.

It's also looking as if the draft won't be as strong when it comes to olinemen, so I can definitely see us going DB in the first couple of rounds.

I'm thinking as of right now, AOA at FS and Chuch at SS is a real possibility in the future.

Granted its WAY early, but lets look at what we have. AOA has show intelligence and he is big and fast. Thats is 3 pluses. This guy can probably play FS in the NFL in time.

Chuch not only showed he has something in offseason workouts. He showed it in preseason. Not only did he show something in preseason, he has now shown something in the regular season not only in special teams, but now at strong safety too!

I'm not pretending to know the future for the Cowboys safety, but I think there might be something to watch here.

What do you think? Could AOA be our future FS and Church be our future SS?

I think this is all just hype and homerism. I don't think Church has the look of a real high quality starter, nothing I've seen from him so far makes him look better than Sensy. I do believe he'll be a good backup and STer for the Cowboys for at least 3 seasons. I'm not quite sure what to make of AoA yet, all this chit chat about how smart he is, is meaningless if he can't get on the field and make plays. I think they want to look at him as a potential starting FS but he won't get much time at that position until next preseason unless something happens to Ball (knock on wood).

The team already has a huge pot of safeties to simmer and cook out. I think the team picks up a couple of corners and a couple of linemen this next draft. A late tight end might not be bad either.

On Roy Williams, I think attitude ate him up...and all the pleasant stuff he could keep around distracted his own view with decreasing skills. Money warped his own opinions and he got soft. The horsecollar was a lazy man's approach to tackling and positioning. When the secondary becomes lazy in positioning, those players just don't cover opponent's receivers.

IF, the Cowboys draft a safety next year and IF, he comes out it better be this guy

that the boys draft. Rahim Moore is legit!

The cowboys need a physical safety that can cover..Albeit, arguably the toughest type of defensive player to find these days..We need a safety that can cover and tackle but more importantly plays physical..A guy who is not afraid to get their nose dirty...The biggest thing this defense is lacking is a playmaker at the safety position..

I am going to say something that a lot of people probably wont like..but I dont think AOA is what we are looking for at safety..I could easily be wrong and I dont pretend to know everything about him because honestly he hasnt played at all at safety..However, I just dont see AOA being physical enough / willing to get his nose dirty and create big plays..IE - stripping defenders and making big hits...

again, IMO, this type of player seems to be the hardest type of player to find in the NFL right now

Yep. He should have been a Trojan. Great player and a great kid.

Our starting safeties are 25 and 27, and they are doing a pretty decent job, and we are already talking about safeties of the future?

There's probably a few guys rated above him at this point, so he's a definite possibility late first or early second if we opt to trade down.

I know, the University of Texas lost this past week, but it has three in it's secondary that bear following as well into the future.

I'm interested in finding game film on Alan Ball. Are the coaches pleased with him so far? We haven't allowed many big plays down the field (other than the Knox catch) but is that more b/c of Jenkins' abilities as a good CB or does Ball actually have something to do with it?

Either way, we could still do better. You either have those instincts as a safety/ballhawk or you don't. Doesn't seem like Ball has that so far. I can dismiss the poor tackling because not every FS is gonna be a great tackler but he better be getting some picks or even some pass deflections to make up for it.

My gosh, Ball has only played 3 games as a starter at FS... Let's wait a while before we proclaim him to be a failure.

It's too soon to think about future safeties. We're still evaluating Ball. I do think we can do better than Ball. I think he's adequate. The safety from Clemson will be hard to acquire. He'll likely be a first round pick.

Why would anyone want to be a Trojan? The kid looks great in Blue and Gold!

I was really hoping for Earl Thomas since about last September but I had to settle for Dez Bryant :

Did you see that int by Thomas on Sunday. He's going to be a good one.

I'm okay with Ball at safety but I'd much rather have him as the 4th CB. Like the OP I see AOA taking the FS spot in time.

He'll look even better in Blue and Silver...or Blue and Green if you believe some of the people around here.

My daughter is currently "talking" to a Bruin football player. I'm very disappointed in her.
