Our offense saw Romo go down early. Smith only played a couple of series but the rest of the starters played the first half. Still no exotic formations like the bunch I had heard about and the running game consisted almost entirely of middle isos and outside runs where various backside linemen would pull functionally shifting the los. Still aren't running the stretch.

To counter the Seahawks ran LB twists and blitzes from outside and inside the formation and rolled the coverage. The protection worsened as the night went on as expected and once again Showers was fed to the wolves.

Seattle's offense is a pita to play even when they're running staple plays. They like to move the pocket and run a myriad of misdirection plays ranging from the standard run fake right and leak out a receiver left to the zone option plays that we ourselves have incorporated. Then you have Wilson and Boykins who are both fast, slippery, and accomplished at helping their blockers. We didn't seem to be spying them nor did we really seems to prepare for the offense as our DE who have the onus did not play disciplined to the option and were chasing their own tails frequently.

We also ran cover 3 ad nauseum which happens to be Seattle's base defense that they practice against and cannot help but be familiar. Twists, stunts, and blitzes were few and the most exotic things I saw were a vanilla zone blitz with a DE dropping and a hard slant to the strongside which puts a lot of pressure on the backers to fill the backside. The latter is a favorite of Marinelli in PS and was botched multiple times by all three units. That being said the early defense held its own early despite starting a makeshift line once again and a MLB who has not played in quite some time. Once the starters went out it was more of what I have come to expect from our defensive backups: botched run fills, inconsistent tackling, and loss of contain.

Special teams continues to improve. More than half the punts were fair catches and the open field tackling was much better; I'm looking at you JJ Wilcox. The guys are also doing a better of picking up coverage on the run, Mayle's block in the back notwithstanding. Bailey was 1/2 outside 50 yards but the miss missed badly.

This was another game where the Cowboys pulled their units before the opposition. The Seachickens played into the second half on offense.

Romo's injury highlights the importance Prescott's development. He needs to do a better job understanding his limitations at this point of his career and have a little more faith in Zeke. Zeke had picked Avril up but by immediately abandoning the pocket he surrendered 21's leverage. When he first writhed grabbing his back I thought it might be over for 9 but he will play another day. I don't see him making it to 2018.

Dak continues to shine. He missed a couple of open receivers but he has the mind to quickly read the defense even when under pressure. His execution to end the 1st half was another example of his precociousness. When Romo emerged, people credited him with moxie. Well, Dak has it too and to think that he is going to significantly improve over the next few years as he learns the offense and his receivers I have a hard time fathoming his limits. Moxie, toughness, mobility, intelligence. His accuracy has dipped a bit but he was about perfect before and he makes rookie mistakes like dropping back incorrectly on a read option handoff. Nonetheless, I can understand why he is now the envy of the division.

Showers is not put in a good position but I am beginning to think we may only keep 2 QBs. I am willing to give him mulligans because of the horrific pass protection on the third unit but coughing up the ball when in the grasp is a huge negative. He has a rocket arm but I would like to see some touch on some throws.

Fred can still maul DT isolated inline and combo block like few else can. They asked him to pull outside, angle block and otherwise attack the second level and he was again on the ground this time trying to keep up with the quickness of Wagner, Wright and co. Granted they are elite in pursuit but I would like to see a better job at least slowing pursuit down. Zeke is a lot faster and the angles a lot sharper so perhaps he needs to adjust. He kept trying to come back having overrun his man. His pass protection was sound. He displays great patience and awareness. He punches hard.

Martin was only given issue by 93 of the Seahawks who could stand him up on the line and hold the poa. Everyone else was blown off the ball. He reached his blocks and continues to epitomize technical line play.

Collins continues to stand out because of his strength. His punch is jarring and stands up 320 lbs men like children. He still plays nasty. He missed passing off a twist but was otherwise consistent.

Smith only played two downs but still maintains the reputation of once he gets his hands in you it's over. He missed a reach block but the DT got a good jump off the snap and angled away from him. I've seen him make that play but he might be the only one whoever does.

Free let Avril get inside of him, got stood up and got rocked back. He was sluggish off the snap but at least didn't get his feet crossed up and fall down as I have sen him do in the past. It led to a sack but he didn't give up a big hit. His feet pulling and getting to the second level are still his biggest asset. He does a much better job in the power department. He drove and sealed Avril a couple of times.

Green has improved. He does a much better job recovering from a mistake. He stopped his feet thinking he had stoned an outside move, he had, but in doing so he opened up the door on an inside move which led to the sack strip. They tried it again twice and failed which was an improvement over him compounding a mistake by doing it again. He is inconsistent out of his stance and this becomes more pronounced the longer he plays but again in this he is showing better mental toughness. I fully expect them to pick a veteran up to play swing tackle. He isn't ready but he keeps reminding me of Parnell and Adams who had similar issues with consistency early. I am still high on him as a prospect because of his quick feet and above average power.

Looney is more of a scrapper than a mauler and was the only one of the interior linemen worth a flip inline after the second unit. Leary was sorely missed and Jackson/Flowers had to deal with a lot of penetration. Looney doesn't blow people off the ball but he also doesn't miss blocks.

Witzmann has poor footwork and often ends up losing his base. This steals his power and limits his mobility. At this point he is inconsistent but he does have good snaps where things seem to come together for him.

Prefacing the TE it is important to point out the two primary roles they play. The Y is the standard position that gives the position its namesake. Starting inline demands a lot of inline blocking and pass protection. The other position is the h-back which is close to the line but flanked back a step or two. You often see the h-back go in motion to even out or overload one side of a formation amongst other things. This position is more often asked to block out in space getting onto LB and DBs.

When Witten was in the game, he lined up primarily at the Y except on third down. On third down he often gets flexed like a WR. I was encouraged by the downfield strike for a TD; Wright didn't give up separation but it was just better offense. Nice to see the rapport he has with Dak. He remains effective inline blocking and helped seal the edge for those Zeke outside runs.

With Witten playing the Y, Swaim played the H in 12 personnel which they ran quite a bit of. He is apt at getting to his target but he struggled to hold onto Wagner and Wright. He does like to maul DBs and reminds me of where Escobar was 2 years ago. Inline at the Y with the second unit he got accordioned, stood up, struggled to extend and otherwise demonstrated a lack of functional strength.

Escobar played on third downs and caught what was thrown to him. Did not show much this game either way. I'm not sure what this portends. they definitely wanted to take a look at the other players at the position.

Traylor caught a pass in traffic and does have better functional strength inline albeit against the 2s and 3s of the opponent. I keep waiting for him to make a nice block or tackle on ST but have yet to see it.

We all saw Zeke run but he does have the speed to get to the edge and the power to run over Cam Chancellor. What stood out to me beyond that was his pass protection. He was regularly stoning twisting LB at the los and he did a good job coming across the formation and upending a blitzing Wright on the play Romo tried to escape the pocket.

Morris continues to impress with his vision elusiveness and power. He continues to be a factor in the passing game with both catches and blocks.

Darius Jackson continues to impress finding daylight behind a suspect offensive line. His speed is obvious and vision continues to surprise in a good way. He stayed inside on a blitz pickup when Seattle sugared the A gap but Laufenberg seemed to think Dak called the middle protection. Nonetheless I would like to see better awareness here when both LB bailed. His blocking technique is sounds and he was squaring up blitzes well.

TWill is doing better out of his brakes and running better routes but his body catching continues to drive me nuts. He dropped a deep pass on the post because he once again tried to bady catch.

Butler gets open on slants, in, out, go and post so far this preseason. Although his gives little on ST he would seem to secured a spot due to the lack of a backup outside receiver.

Beasley remains elusive but he is doing it farther downfield. His size makes him hard to throw open but that doesn't matter when you are getting open on your own. He forced a hold from the S on his break on a deep flag route.

Lucky will make the team on the strength of his returns and they can run gadget plays and screens for him but he needs to show better hands on routes of he wants to compete for a serious role on offense.

Mayle, Smith and Jones all did a good job getting open and catching the ball. Smith led in receptions but have yet to see him make plays on ST. Mayle shows up on teams the most of the bunch but they are all long shots to makes the rosters as a 6th WR.

Mayowa got his first game action as a Cowboy. He uses his hands well. I look for DL to engaged OL with arm extension and lean. He seems advanced in this regard. He doesn't stop his hands or his feet and shows quickness and the handwork to get upfield or redirect back inside. He is more talented and skilled than say Selvie or Mincey were and I believe he can contribute.

DLaw was not playing all out. I don't know if he was sluggish because he was switching back to strongside or if he is just taking the PS easy but I have seen him play more explosive and tenacious then what I saw on display this time.

Russell was doing an excellent job getting off blocks against the run and pass. He had a TFL but better technique would have seen him with two sacks as well. Keeping contain is necessary with mobile QB and as was pointed out on the telecast by Campo: you have to attack the outside shoulder. He kept getting to far inside and allowed both QBs to roll away to the outside. Was a better performance and he continues to display admirable stamina as he played all 4 quarters.

McAdoo improved getting off blocks in the run game getting in on a couple of tackles at the poa. He was not having similar luck getting penetration vs the pass.

Collins got his first game action. He lacks core and upper body strength as I saw him get accordioned and struggle to get extension. He was not engaging blockers with arm extension and he just is not strong enough to get away with that. He will make the roster but I expect him to not suit up on game day unless he improves or people get dinged.

McClain did a good job holding the poa and sitting down on double teams. Was not getting as much penetration and I would like to see better hands getting off blocks.

Thornton still has a quick first step but he did not play much.

Coe was back to looking unaware and getting hooked from behind and surprised by double teams. Was not an encouraging performance on defense. OTOH, he does seem to have some ability blocking on KR.

Okoye looks huge out there. He is built like Brockers with long arms on a massive frame. He was doing a nice job with lean and extension and it resulted in him making several plays. He is raw lacking moves beyond punching and trying to overpower but he keeps his hands alive and was having success with it. He seems a heck of a prospect to my eye. He is a dark horse to make the roster because of numbers but he has a shot and is definite PS material.

Lee is diagnosing plays and beating people to the point of attack as he is known for. Slippery to begin with he is moving very well and primed for a big year.

Durant started and struggled a bit on the stack and shed but he was quick to diagnose particularly in the passing game. Seemed a bit rusty on his run fills but was anticipating routes well.

Wilber just doesn't run well and we were playing him off the line more than I would like. He seems perpetually on the chase out there.

Hitchens got a bad report from USA Today. Made me go back and rewatch to make sure my initial impression was correct. They said he struggled to get off blocks and in coverage. I didn't see that at all. In the beginning of the second half he gave up contain and filled the wrong gap inside giving up a run and I would like to see him adjust his drop to attack routes that come right at him off the snap but he was tackling well and very good in pursuit.

Wilson is chasing too much and needs to anticipate better. He doesn't run well enough to get away staring down runs and routes. I think that USA Today combing Wilson and Durant and called it Hitchens.

Hepburn, Maumba, et al did nothing to impress at all. Fodder.

Jones was doing a good job on his keys and attacking. Nice tackling but it hard to see what FS is doing in coverage on a telecast unless they are giving up plays and they highlight the replay.

Church is still a good tackler and STer. Remains slow as molasses breaking on balls.

Wilcox avoided the gaffe this time around made a nice open field tackle on ST. Would like to see some play making.

Heath made the same mistake that Hitchens did giving up contain and allowing the RB outside for a nice gain. He also bit hard on a playaction fake and couldn't find the WR giving up a long completion. His return on punt coverage was well received as he was there on multiple fair catches.

Frazier is thinking too much, seems overwhelmed, and it shows in his awareness. He got trucked on an illegal peel back block, was staring at routes, and was tentative coming up on run fills. He does show up on ST and is an asset in pursuit but has a long way to go.

Frey is a talented FS. His man coverage on a double move was tight and he doesn't give up long completions. His speed and tackling is evident in pursuit as well and he shows up on ST. He's 26 and was out of the league last year but his 4.4 speed is apparent and at 6' 205 he has the size to play the position. He has a shot to make the squad and maybe force Wilcox off the roster.

Claiborne gave up the TD but he was on the receiver's hip carrying him across the field and was inches away from making a play on a well thrown ball. His tackling wasn't perfect but he is much more physical than I have seen him since he arrived in Dallas. He makes plays on the ball.

Nothing new to report on Carr. He is consistent and has added strength and physicality to his game.

Brown is more than I expected by far. The coverage is good and that is not surprising due to his athletic ability. The ball skills getting tips and otherwise making plays on the ball I did not expect. The physicality in pursuit I had no idea he had in his game. He led the team in tackles and had 5 solo tackles. These were not downfield either. People have been complaining about lack of late draft success. He is a keeper.

Olatoye had good coverage on Seattle's starting WR. He is a physical tackler and shows up on ST. He is the 5th best corner on the squad.

Swanson only showed up on defense blitzing and didn't have a hole lot of success. He can sure return kicks though. I expect we will try to keep him on the PS on the strength of that is someone else does not claim him.

Secondary seems better coached that it was last year. More guys making plays on the ball, more physical tackling, and better overall awareness even with the mistakes I have seen. Kudos to Baker and Jackson.

Very nice recount of the game. One of the best I've read. Encouraging to hear Hichens may not have been as bad as others have stated.

Is there a TL: DR version?

Just kidding, was a great read. Missed most of the game, so I appreciate the write up!

Hold on. I have it on good authority that teams are all running vanilla extract in preseason. How does this jibe with your insistence that Seattle did not? Are you implying that the collective wisdom is wrong?

FANTASTIC stuff, Fuzz man! I could read your analysis all day.

I could not agree more about Okoye. I really hope he sticks.

Awesome analysis.

I had the same take on Hitchens. People claimed he was terrible, but I just didn't see it. I think people blamed Hitchens for some gaffes by Wilson. I do like some things about Wilson (decent stack and shed), but he really needed that time he missed at the beginning of the preseason. Durant was ok but looked a little stiff or something. He seems like he might have gained some weight.

Frey is an interesting player and you're the only person I've seen mention him. He does some good things. My guess is that other teams just tried him a CB, but maybe FS gives him a chance. At this point I would take him over Wilcox. I just don't know what happened with Wilcox. He was never great or anything, but he was much better in 2014 than now. He either just quit putting in the effort or they've made changes to the defense that makes it too complicated for him.

I need to watch Swaim again, I had in mind that his blocking was decent, but I have not focused on him.

I'm not sure they'll fit a better OT after the cuts than Green; although, I do wonder about his conditioning issue. I can't remember a player whose ability changed so drastically due to fatigue. I would like to see him at RT for a few snaps.

Coe appears to have some talent, but as you indicated awareness is a big issue.

Russell drives me crazy. He often appears to be beating the OT initially, but then seems to let up on his effort after a couple of seconds. He takes Spencer's Almost-Anthony concept to a new level.

You're also the first person I've seen mention Okoye. He flashed some ability in this game and I noticed him in practices early in TC.

I don't even know who will be the top backup 3-tech DT. Maybe Jack Crawford, but he also might start at LDE with Lawrence out and Irving missing time with an injury. M.Collins appears to need more time after missing most of the preseason with an injury. The injury to Jenkins was unfortunate. IIRC they had Thorton and McClain on the field together for some snaps. I guess the top 3 in the DT rotation will be T.Crawford, Thorton and McClain. Thorton appears to have lost some weight from when he was with the Eagles.

nice write-up!

--Not that it's important, but I think that Free had Avril and Zeke picked up a left side blitzer.
Great block but the guy did flip over Zeke and what probably in the split second seemed like an issue.
Romo could have just moved up in the pocket more and have been ok. I'm sure out of the corner of his eye he saw Avril get the jump on Free to his backside. Turns out Avril ahs to loop further out and around--which he did at seemingly light speed.
Romo saw what seemed like safer daylight and room to slide but didn't get tot he spot soon enough.
Crunch

--I assume Butler has made this team.

--Sure hope DLaw give us more than he's shown. Keep hearing that he has been great in practices.

--DT is possibly a position of strength now.

--I know Wilber a decent special team, but that guy is a liability on D

Great writeup @FuzzyLumpkins . I notice the lack of zone stretch too - it was so dominant in 2014 and while they ran it last year, they clearly favored running power sweeps whenever they tried to go outside. Any opinion on the reason? Is it just the difference in Callahan leaving, or do they just think that running a more power/man style run to the outside fits this line's skillset?

Callahan is the likely reason why I can think that if it is the case. I have a hard time believing Linehan and co don't know how to run it maybe. It might be they are trying to set up expectations for the opener as well.

Yeah I messed up on the Romo blurb and got it right on the Zeke blurb but you are correct Wright was blitzing the edge.
