Canty Coming Back Looks Doubtful

Spoke with the agent who represents free agent defensive end Chris Canty, and my feeling is that there is no way the Cowboys will have the money to keep him.

Defensive ends are always paid big as free agents, and the Cowboys aren't going to have the necessary room to sign him to the type of deal he's going to want.

Canty is not a star, but he's a solid pro.

So, Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen, this is your chance.

Good news.

You pay your stars big money, not everybody.

Good.

I don't want the Cowboys to overpay and if they sign him, they'll have overpaid.

I like Chris Canty but he's not a star player. There's a couple of teams moving to a 3-4 and his market value is high right now. We aren't going to have a huge drop off with Jason Hatcher. Sign or draft a rotational player.

Solid pro?

Since when.

The guy was a disappointment.

I'm with you, didn't see that stupid flex celebration nearly enough to merit the deal he wants.

Disappointment?

He was a 4th round pick and started for the past several years. hardly a disappointment.

He didn't play like Richard Seymour, but I thought he held his own...

He was solid against the run and not a troublemaker...

If Dallas can improve that position then best wishes CC

Wee! Two probable compensatory picks, just from the defensive line!

The thing about Canty is that its not his numbers that are setting his price tag so high, but rather his physical attributes, age, and increasing upside.
Cant say that about any other FA DE on the market right now.
Oshlansky? We will see, but IMO when both careers are done, Canty will have left a bigger mark in this league.
Sometimes you have to let good players go, thats why you spend 3rd rounders on guys like Hatcher.
Canty = good player, bad for the cap
Hatcher/Bowen = ?, good for the cap

Disappointment? Canty was a 4th round pick who was a solid starter. There aren't a ton of guys in the league who could do that as a 3-4 DE. He will be hard to replace, especially since the Hatcher is a JAG and Bowen is <JAG

No, he wasn't. He's a solid player, lunch box type of guy who will show up every week and has a very good work ethic.

However, that doesn't mean he should be paid like a star player, which he's not.

I hate free agency. From a fan standpoint it disrupts teams and really feeling like you know the players. It and the owner greed drives up prices also.

From a player standpoint it is great.

10 bucks says you will be one of the guys saying if we still had canty ...blah blah once the season starts.

and remember he plays in front of ware and did a good job of using his body and size to swallow tackles up and let ware roam free and sneak in behind him.

this obsession with sacks for our defensive players from every position is nutty. Some guys are role players within a system and some are the numbers guys.

 finally someone with a solid point. Chris has done his job well, not to mention he is always knocking passes down.

Yeah. The old system was quite unfair to players and it needed to be changed for that reason, but for Cowboys fans the old system was better.

Canty could have been the next Larry Cole -- a reliably, solid contributor (but not an all star) for a long time. As it is, Canty turns out to be a short-timer.
