Cowboys, Lions keeping Thanksgiving tradition...for 2009

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell promised that the Cowboys and the Lions will continue their Thanksgiving tradition this season, but he made no promises beyond 2009. In his annual state of the league address Friday, Goodell said alternating the site of the Thanksgiving Day games could be discussed.

Some owners have complained that by hosting a Thanksgiving game every year, the Cowboys and the Lions have a competitive advantage.

"I do understand it's a great tradition in Detroit and Dallas," Goodell said.

Goodell was asked about the ice strom in North Texas this week, two years before the Super Bowl arrives.

"I did notice that," Goodell said to laughter.

He added that the league understood the risk in awarding the game to North Texas and is hoping for good weather for Super Bowl XLV.

Does this mean that they oppose being scheduled for Thursday or Saturday games throughout the season also?

I wish I knew who these owners were.

You pull that game away from me Sheriff Goodell, and I swear you may need the jaws of life to remove my foot from your trash.

Here's a real simple idea. Allow each team in the NFL to host a Thursday night game every season. Two games every Thursday night for 16 of the 17 NFL weeks.

Keep Dallas and Detroit on the Thanksgiving Thursday.

Everyone is happy right? No one has a "competitive advantage" if they all get the same treatment.

I think it would still take 2/3 owner votes to approve this. I know last time it was talked about Jones mentioned that. I do know Jerry will not let it go without a fight

How in the blue hell is it advantage when we have two play two games in 5 days?

Is it an advantage for teams that play a Thursday night game?

Get rid of those also.

Oh, that would be too simple for these owners who feel that big bad Dallas has a competitive advantage by hosting one very intimidating Thanksgiving Day game every single year. You'll have to do much better than that to appease these guys.

Good post. ;)

Seriously, what kind of advantage does it give us? Because we know one of our home games is on Thanksgiving?

The schedule is released before the season, so its not like the schedule is released a couple days before each game, ***? I wonder who the *****ing owners are? And does their head coaches agree with that?

Here is what I wrote about this a few months ago

http://cowboyszone.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2451136&postcount=1

Anyone else notice how the media and opposing fans do not make an issue games played on any other Thursday? They have been played on weeks 10, 11, 12 and 13 (Thanksgiving). In addition they are scheduled in weeks 14, 15 and 16. Yet they all complain about the Thanksgiving games for Detroit and Dallas.

You can not flex this game as I have seen mentioned on other sites. It is not an easy game to schedule for the home team. All the vendors, employees and other local companies need to make preparations to host such an event. The majority of these people are used to enjoying the holiday with family and friends and not working. Obviously it is not an easy game to move to another city as some suggest.

The advantage comes from having to travel on a very, very short week.

Aikman made a fuss about it a while back saying that Dallas shouldn't ever have a home game right before the T-Day game just to balance things out.

At the time I thought he was talking out of his *** and should have kept his mouth shut. If that is what it took to keep the T-day game in Dallas, I guess that is what would have to happen.

If the NFL ever takes that game from Dallas, I'll be pissed.

First you threaten Peter King, now Goodell. Since bad things come in threes, I'm going into hiding.

So why don't they make a rule that both Dallas and Detroit must have a away game before their Thanksgiving game? I would join Hostile in shoving some things up Goodell's arse.

lol Hostile, im sorry, but I am rolling around on the ground laughing, at what you said you would do to the commissioner, loved it

and yes, i do think the commissioner will try to pull that game away from the cowboys. Remember, he is a patriot fan, so you watch, he will try to get that game played at the patriots home stadium.

i dont like goodell, never did,

i think also what we need to do as fans Hostile, is to get a poll going on all cowboys boards every where, let them see what the commissioner said, and get a letter off to the NFL to protest and shut the commissioner up.

No guarantee Cowboys will keep Thanksgiving game after 2009

BY CHAREAN WILLIAMS
cjwilliams@star-telegram.com
TAMPA, Fla. — The Dallas Cowboys, except for two years in the 1970s, have been a fixture on Thanksgiving Day since 1966. The Detroit Lions have hosted the annual holiday game even longer, since 1934.
But there is no guarantee either team will have a Thanksgiving Day game in 2010.
“I attended that [Thanksgiving] game [in Detroit] a little over a year ago,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in his state of the league news conference Friday. “I understand it’s a great tradition in Detroit and Dallas. [Moving the game around] is something that our owners have raised from time to time. It will not change for this season. As to whether ownership feels the same, we will discuss it as we get later in the year. We certainly will raise it.”
Some owners have complained that the Lions and the Cowboys have a competitive advantage playing at home on Thanksgiving every year. The Cowboys are 26-14-1 on Thanksgiving Day; the Lions are 33-33-2. Two years ago, the NFL added a third Thanksgiving game that rotates sites.
The Lions’ 0-16 season, including a 47-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Thanksgiving, didn’t help their case to continue as hosts.
The Cowboys will start what they hope is another tradition when Super Bowl XLV comes to North Texas in 2011. But this week, only two years before North Texas’ big week, sleet and freezing drizzle hit Dallas-Fort Worth.
“I did notice that,” Goodell said. “But I heard the next day that it was sunny and beautiful, too. We understood that risk when we awarded the game to Dallas, and we’re excited about being there. It’s a great community. It’s going to be a terrific stadium. I can’t wait to see it this season, but I think it’s going to be a great event for us.”
The Cowboys could be a candidate for another big game.
Goodell is hopeful of playing a regular-season game in Mexico in 2010 as part of the league’s initiative to expand the game internationally. In 2005, the Arizona Cardinals beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-14 in front of an all-time attendance record of 103,467 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. It was the first regular-season game played outside the U.S.
“We would love to be back in Mexico,” Goodell said. “As you know, it [had] the first city outside of the United States to host a regular-season game, and it was a great, successful one. We would love to be back there. It won’t happen this year, but we are in negotiations with our partners down in Mexico. I am confident that we will get there for the 2010 year.”
The Cowboys are the most popular team in Mexico. They have played four exhibition games there, including in 1994, when a record crowd of 112,376 attended their game against the Houston Oilers in Azteca Stadium.

oh, cant you just feel the advantage the Boys and Lions are enjoying
