The Cowboys are in the market for a backup quarterback, and considering the recent run of bad luck they had with an aging, way-past-his-prime Brad Johnson, here is one vote to stay away from Jeff Garcia.

The veteran passer told the St. Pete Times that his time with the Bucs is done.

He's 39, and clearly his best days are long, long gone.

The Cowboys need to grow young at the backup QB position, and the veteran-types such as Garcia aren't the answer. At all.

The Cowboys have targeted the position as as a "need" for this draft, so expect them to spend a third to a fifth-round pick on a rookie passer they can develop.

Several people at Valley Ranch, most notably owner/GM Jerry Jones, felt burned by the way Johnson played in his three starts in place of Tony Romo. A lot of people, including Jones, were told Johnson could still play. But it became evident in the second drive of Johnson's first start against the Rams back in October that he no longer could. Teams shortened the field against Johnson and the offense went stalled until Romo returned.

The Cowboys don't need to strike it rich with the likes of a Matt Cassel, but at this point they need to try.

how about someone under the age of 30. :)
How about drafting one, we've not done that since Quincy, and before that it was, geesh I don't even remember. Quincy was a reach though, but I'd think seriously about picking up a 3rd/4th rounder and let the chips fall. If anything, if he turns out to be great during a Romo injury (God forbid) and Romo is great as well, we can pick up a #1 for the kid or something down the road.

have a problem with Garcia. As a matter of fact, he'd probably be a better choice than alot of others IF the Cowboys need a 1 to 2 game starter, particularly an important divisional game. In those games you want somebody who's been there and done that before like Garcia has, and has the physical abilities ( elusive in the pocket, average to above average arm strength ) that he has.

HOWEVER, the one caviat that I'd put on that idea is that the Cowboys must:

a) draft a QB early enough ( 4th or 5th round ) who's talented enough to be carried full time on the roster as the 3rd QB.

OR

b) Along with Garcia, sign a young QB like a Kyle Boller or Alex Smith as a 3rd qb, PLUS draft a developmental guy in the 6th or 7th round who can be stashed in the practice squad.

Okay, are we trying for a Super Bowl this year or not? I fail to see how drafting a QB in the third or fifth round is going to help us do that.

We have to have a veteran QB that can compete in this league.

I said that Garcia would be a good choice earlier this year, and a certain other poster said that he would be pursued by many other teams as their starter.

Garcia the "Dinosaur" is better than what Dallas has on it's roster. Unlike Brad, Jeff G. can still play (he can scramble too) and with the weapons Dallas has it would only help. Plus, it gives Romo better competition.

You can also draft a QB too. I would just feel better if the team gets a vet that can play, and have a rookie QB that have an upside.

The tricky part is what's on Jeff's mind.

So who told Jerry, that Johnson could still play? Could that be ...... RJ?( A lousy QB himself, which certainly qualified to him to see Johnson's shortcomings. Except he didn't. That's a bad, bad sign for future growth potential in RJ)

And then let's see, who tried to slip Matt Moore through waivers when he played well in preseason, and showed good potential to at least be a quality back up. (Moore was not selected in the 2007 NFL Draft, but was signed as a free agent by the Dallas Cowboys. Despite completing 21 of 29 passes for 182 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions to generate a 100.1 quarterback rating during the preseason for the Cowboys, Moore was waived on September 1, the Cowboys intending to sign him to their practice squad had he passed through waiver) Could it be? Was that ... RJ? So we give up Moore, and keep who again?

Oh yeah, Brad Johnson. (Preseason stats 2007)

2007 (Dallas Cowboys 7 11 0.7 63.6 79 4.9 7.2 0 0 1 85.0
2008 Dallas Cowboys 41 78 26.0 52.6 427 142.3 5.5 2 5 8 50.5

So, I wouldn't trust RJ to coach Mr. Potato Head at this point. He shows poor judgment, an inability to keep players in line, an inability to make in game adjustments, inability to make use of all his players, and gets far more kudos than he deserves. In short, RJ is overrated, overvalued, and honestly, I'd like to see him take a long walk off a short pier than be given another year to 'grow.'

As much as I dog on Phillips, at least Phillips has an excellent resume as a DC. And yeah, I imagine Phillips signed off on RJ's recommendations. But what is that saying? Exactly. We're in trouble this year.

How much more talent will we lose over the next year with this incompetent coaching staff?

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

And as far as getting a new back up for Romo? Well, we're royally Home Depoted. Either draft one, or trade for one. And no more QB's on their last legs. Hasn't Brad Johnson taught us anything?

Chris Simms should be brought in for a look. He could be camp fodder at the very least, but this is the type of offense that gives him the best chance to succeed...or prove he's really not that good.
