The Cowboys are in the market for a backup quarterback, and considering the recent run of bad luck they had with an aging, way-past-his-prime Brad Johnson, here is one vote to stay away from Jeff Garcia.
The veteran passer told the St. Pete Times that his time with the Bucs is done.
He's 39, and clearly his best days are long, long gone.
The Cowboys need to grow young at the backup QB position, and the veteran-types such as Garcia aren't the answer. At all.
The Cowboys have targeted the position as as a "need" for this draft, so expect them to spend a third to a fifth-round pick on a rookie passer they can develop.
Several people at Valley Ranch, most notably owner/GM Jerry Jones, felt burned by the way Johnson played in his three starts in place of Tony Romo. A lot of people, including Jones, were told Johnson could still play. But it became evident in the second drive of Johnson's first start against the Rams back in October that he no longer could. Teams shortened the field against Johnson and the offense went stalled until Romo returned.
The Cowboys don't need to strike it rich with the likes of a Matt Cassel, but at this point they need to try.
