Monday practice update

Here's what we saw during the 30 minutes the media gets to watch practice on Monday....

* WR Isaiah Stanback returned to practice and was catching passes but he was wearing a harness on his left shoulder. He dislocated it against Houston and is trying to put off surgery. Looks like he will play Sunday as the No. 3 receiver.

* LB Kevin Burnett was back at practice for the first time since minor knee surgery on Aug. 15. If all goes well he should be ready to play and return to his nickel role against Cleveland.

* LB Anthony Spencer, WRs Miles Austin and Sam Hurd did not practice.

* NT Tank Johnson was switched numbers from No. 66 to 95.

* Cory Procter was working with the first team at left guard. Could he be the starter? Think the Cowboys were giving Pat McQuistan a chance but they may be settling on Procter. He started the final two games of last year for center Andre Gurode.

I'll be glad when all three of those guys come off the injury list because I think they were being counted on to do some big things in 2008.

Isaiah Stanback looks OK

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

WR Isaiah Stanback is practicing today, 10 days after he dislocated his left shoulder on a kickoff return against Houston.

Stanback, who hopes to postpone surgery on the shoulder until after the season, looked fine while running routes and catching passes in warmups. He was able to get his hands above his head to catch a pass on a crossing route without any problems.

Of course, contact will be the real test for Stanback's shoulder, which is protected by a harness. But there is at least a possibility that he'll play in the season opener, which would give the Cowboys a third receiver.

this is stanback's chance to shine and for all his fanboys to see him.

Wonder how unstable that shoulder really is. Couldn't be too bad or they wouldn't let him play nor would he be able to.

Proctor at guard. Wonder who is light in the rear?

Unless Gurode helps him on every snap, Shaun Rogers is going to eat up Proctor like an unlimited brunch buffet.

just don't have him returning kicks and teach him to get down after the catch when a defender is wrapped around him like TO does, and he'll be fine

hopefully

Stanback said it wasn't as bad as when it happened last year and we let him practice the rest of the season with it.

The concern is that the shoulder has now been injured twice and off-season surgery didn't seem to help it. He didn't fall on it particularly hard when it popped out again, IMO.

Proc has gotten thrown around against reserves. He's going to need a lot of help from Andre Gurode and we'll probably pull him quite a bit if he is indeed going to be the starter.

Hurry up, Montrae Holland.

More like a happy meal.

If Cleveland is a 3-4 outfit, shouldn't Rogers and Gurode be going after each other, and Procter gets a LB?

The Browns run a 3-4 more times than not Rogers will be lined up over Gurode. Depending on the play either Bigg or Proctor will be helping the center. I'm more concerned about Procter getting the line audibles right this week than him being light in the rear.

Proctor is a huge guy, I dont understand why he seems to get pushed around so damn easily.

He is soft or does not know his assignments which prevents him from getting leverage on his assignment. And or a combo of the two.

I wouldn't call him huge. The team roster lists him under 300 (297). He's relatively tall (6'4").

Leonard Davis is huge. (6'6", 354)

Actually, I think it's physical limitations. I don't think he's as big or as strong as someone like Davis or Gurode. I think the reason he has carved out a niche in the league is because he knows his assignments. If he was soft or dumb, he'd be long gone because he isn't getting by on physical abilities.

That has nothing to do with it. This is a pure case of discrimination. It's like the pretty ones always get job.:D

It depends, Jobber. I think if he should be fine catching the ball. The big question will be how that arm holds up when he falls on it or receives a stiff tackle creating the right force vector for dislocation (usually a forward force on the shoulder coming from the back of the shoulder).

I do think it is a gamble but young folk often have an air of invincibility about them. I guess the Cowboys' doctors must be saying it is up to him so hopefully it isn't too unstable.
