Oxnard Observation Deck: Friday afternoon edition

Observations and players of the day from Friday afternoon's workout....

*Fight night: Ok, it wasn't much but LT Doug Free took a swing and landed to the neck/head of LB Tearrius George.

* See ya: Nice double move by WR Mark Bradford leaving CB Anthony Henry bad during one-on-one passing drills.

* Back shoulder time: WR Miles Austin hauled in an impressive back shoulder pass along the sidelines turning around at the last second to make the catch.

* Where's the Mike Jenkins?: For one, the first-round pick is not making many plays as Terrell Owens got the best of him during team drills for a touchdown.

* Tricky: The Cowboys showed off a gadget play with Patrick Crayton, a former QB, trying to throw a half-back pass but the play was busted by the defense. T.O. was running deep across the field as the primary receiver.

* Hey ref, catch this: Funny moment when Backup QB Brad Johnson threw a pass right to the back judge at practice trying to hit Isaiah Stanback in the middle of the field. The ref made the catch showing some nice hands and knowing the Cowboys might be in the market for another receiver.

* Bad hands: Patrick Crayton, who actually has the best hands on the team, had a drop during team drills and caught some grief from LB Bradie James with, "C'mon P.C." Crayton recovered with a TD catch to finish a two-minute drive.

* Two minute INTs: CB Evan Oglesby and LB Bradie James both had inteceptions stopping the offense during the two-minute drill. Bradie's came in the end zone.

* Good hands: WR Miles Austin made a leaping catch at the 5-yard line during the two-minute drill. ... WR Danny Amendola also continues to catch anything he can get his hands on.

* Up close shot: Rookie running back Tashard Choice ran over the NFL Films crew shooting Hard Knocks footage out of bounds on the sidelines. This continues to happen at practice. Workman's compensation better be offered.

* T.O. vs. Pacman: Give the upper hand today to T.O. He beat Pacman on two one-on-one routes including a long pass and deep out. Advantage: Owens. He was also wearing a customized T-shirt with "ilove" on the front and "me some me" on the back. Nice.:laugh2:

* Barber/Felix backfield: Get ready to see them in the backfield together. During 7-on-7 running drills they lined up in the I-formation with Barber as the fullback taking the carry on an inside run.

* Flo dominates: LT Flozell Adams is not getting beat in camp at all. He stonewalled Chris Canty twice during one-on-one pass rush drills.

Offensive player of the day: WR Terrell Owens. Beat Pacman twice and Mike Jenkins for a touchdown. He's not dropping anything either.

Defensive players of the day: CB Evan Oglesby and LB Bradie James. Had interceptions during the two-minute drill.

The Cowboys have two practices Saturday and one on Sunday. One week of training camp is officially in the books. Time to do laundry.

Best cornerback in camp

That would be third-year cornerback Evan Oglesby. He had another interception Friday afternoon during the two-minute offense drill to end practice.

Oglesby has taken the place of injured cornerback Terence Newman working at the slot corner in the nickel package. He picked off a Tony Romo hitch-route pass intended for Miles Austin along the sidelines. Oglesby read the play and ripped it away from Austin.

"I am just working hard getting better everyday and I'm feeling good," Oglesby said. "Fortunately, I am out here just making plays. There is just something about this year. I think it's a special year."

Wade Phillips has noticed his play-making as well as veteran receiver Terrell Owens. With the cornerback competition very stiff and two highly-regarded rookies, Oglesby is shining and feeling more healthy than he ever has in his NFL career. Last year he played with a torn labrum suffered the week of the New England game and had surgery in the offseason.

Oglesby mostly played special teams last year after he was picked up off waivers from Baltimore.

We have a wealth of CBs this year. I see a trade happening= maybe 2. We know who our top 3 are; and then Scandrick and Jenkins are pretty much set as well. We might keep 6 CBs but since Brown was a CB and if he makes it the team might have him at both and then Oglesby and Ball would be trade bait. If they both keep looking good then we will get offers.

Better than Pacman and Henry... Sure.

You know tons of these plays are being made against Bartel and the other QB.

I'm not sure I'd want to trade Oglesby just yet if Jenkins continues to struggle. A shaky Jenkins could be worse than Reeves or (Nate) Jones. We might need Oglesby to keep the seat warm until one of the rookies "gets it" if he keeps making plays.

That could be true, too, CL.

Jenkins is not struggling. This guy doesn't know what he is looking at.

Jenkins looked fine to me and another guy standing next to me that was knowledable. He making these observations based on 1 on 1 drills where the qb stands there and has 10 seconds to throw with no one in his face.

The "nice" double move on Henry to 7 seconds to happen too. This is why it is difficult to get an accurate read on what is actually going on if you are not at the practice.

Oglesby looks ok, but lets not go overboard on him. He made the team because he is a great special teamer, not because he is a great CB.

I really wouldn't put too much stock in some of the media guys opinions about players struggling. Jenkins has gotten pretty good praise also, but as a rookie he still has a lot to learn. Dave Campo in interviews still says that Jenkins is the most ready corner to play in the whole draft.

Thanks for the info bro. Cool to get the full details of some of this stuff. Much appreciated.

Owens has been schooling Newman in practice/drills for quite awhile now.

Just saying...

No doubt.

And TO schooling Pac Man didn't happen. Considering the circumstances, Pac Man had great coverage on every play against TO. Sure, TO caught some, but it was like he was roasted.

I thought Pac Man got the better of the matchup yesterday, in all honesty.

Guess I just look at thiings differently...

We also need to remember that Oglesby isn't a rookie like Jenkins. This is Oglesby 2nd year with the Cowboys and he should know their defense. Jenkins is still learning everthing. I assume we will keep 6 CBs with it coming down to Ball vs Oglesby for the last slot. We'll how how both do in the preseason games. I also believe the Cowboys will trade off at least 1 CB, maybe a RB like Coleman & maybe an OL probably to the Dolphins for a 5th rounder since 2 out of 3 will start for them. OTOH, maybe we can get the Dolphins 4th rounder.

McQuistan is also a possible trade to Miami

I hope Dallas is able to use some of this excess talent to help themselves in trades. I'd hate to just cut a lot of good players, although that's a nice problem to have.
