Stanback needs big game
Receiver Isaiah Stanback has had more injuries than catches since the Cowboys made him a fourth-round pick in 2007. He probably is down to his last chance to make the roster. Stanback has been passed by rookie Kevin Ogletree, who appears a lock to be the team's fifth receiver. So Stanback's only hope is for the team to keep six receivers.
Stanback didn't help himself with a lost fumble last week against San Francisco, so he needs to show something this week for the Cowboys to even entertain the idea of keeping Stanback on the 53-player roster.
"You can’t [worry about it]," Stanback said. "When you start doing that, that’s when everything else starts getting affected. You’ve got to play. You’ve just got to play. They evaluate everything. The people on the outside, they only see half, or not even half, of what’s really being evaluated. So you’ve just got to go out there and do your job and hopefully you get some chances."

Practice time
Safety Alan Ball (concussion), receiver Sam Hurd (bruised thigh), quarterback Stephen McGee (knee), fullback Deon Anderson (knee), defensive end Marcus Dixon (groin) and new linebacker Curtis Johnson (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday.
Receiver Roy Williams, who returned to practice Tuesday after injuring his shoulder in Thursday’s practice, said as long as his “legs are fine” he is good to go. He will not play Friday night, but he will start in the season opener at Tampa.

QB play
Tony Romo is not expected to play Friday night against Minnesota. That means Jon Kitna will start and fourth-stringer Rudy Carpenter will finish. Carpenter, an undrafted free agent from Arizona State, said he expects to play close to three quarters. Carpenter's only snap this preseason was a kneel-down at the end of the Tennessee game.
"I'm just so happy I'm going to get a chance to play, and play a lot, on Friday," said Carpenter, who started 43 consecutive games at Arizona State.
