The funny Mrs. Landry

Alicia Landry was the guest of honor at a Cowboys luncheon held Friday at the Marriott Hotel in Irving to say goodbye to Texas Stadium, which is scheduled to be demolished at 7 a.m. Sunday. The widow of legendary Cowboy coach Tom Landry was presented the last key to the City of Irving with an imprint of Texas Stadium on it. When Texas Stadium is blown up, the imprint will also be gone.

The event featured many key Cowboy players including Walt Garrison, Drew Pearson, Rayfield Wright, Cliff Harris, Preston Pearson and Billy Joe Dupree. There were a number of funny stories about the stadium, but perhaps the most amazing was told by former quarterback Chad Hennings, who said that after a game, he was in the locker room, turned around to meet someone, and came face to face with Nelson Mandela.

In terms of making the audience laugh, however, Alicia Landry was not to be outdone. She spoke of the building of Texas Stadium and how it became the showplace for America's Team, then went on to say that America's team was "led by Captain America, Roger Staubach, and coached by -- as he was known in our house -- the great Tom Landry."

It was a nice, light moment and a tongue-in-cheek tribute to her husband, who probably was smiling somewhere.

Must have been thinking Chad Hutchinson. Poor Chad is still trying to figure out his role on the team. :)

Isn't Alicia Landry the reason for the star on the helmet? I believe I read somewhere that it was her idea.

Pretty gal in her day.

That was a great luncheon. The Landry line was perfect and had everyone rolling. The Hennings story was funny, but Jan left out the best part.......that Prince Bandar was the one who was introducing Hennings to Mandela, but that Chad only had jockey shorts on for the introduction and the picture that followed. Bandar felt a connection to Hennings because they were both pilots. The stories were great and all the players that were there seemed to agree that they can blow up the building, but they can never take the memories away from them or us. And oh what great memories they are.....:starspin
