With the NFL draft just days away, Charean Williams, the Star-Telegram's football insider, has been in her laboratory mixing up a formula for the first round. Here are her predictions, as of April 23:
1. Oakland – Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech
Comment: Randy Moss is a goner in this scenario.
2. Detroit – Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson
Comment: Rod Marinelli can’t pass on the draft’s best pass rusher.
3. Cleveland – JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU
Comment: Browns GM Phil Savage and Russell have a long relationship.
4. Tampa Bay – Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin
Comment: The Bucs did well the last time they took a Wisconsin tackle in the first round (Paul Gruber).
5. Arizona – Levi Brown, OT, Penn State
Comment: He fills a need, and makes new line coach Russ Grimm very happy.
6. Washington – LaRon Landry, S, LSU
Comment: He will give the Commanders one of the best safety tandems in the NFL.
7. Minnesota – Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame
Comment: The Vikings cannot go into the season with Tarvaris Jackson as their best hope.
8. Atlanta – Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas
Comment: The Falcons need to replace Patrick Kerney.
9. Miami – Ted Ginn Jr., WR, Ohio State
Comment: The Dolphins could try to trade down a few spots and get Ginn.
10. Houston – Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma
Comment: After passing on Reggie Bush last year, the Texans can’t let Peterson slip by.
11. San Francisco – Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville
Comment: The 49ers could use a receiver, but Okoye is too intriguing a prospect.
12. Buffalo – Leon Hall, CB, Michigan
Comment: The Bills get a replacement for Nate Clements.
13. St. Louis – Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska
Comment: Imagine Carriker on one side and Leonard Little on the other.
14. Carolina - Greg lsen, TE, Miami
Comment: The Panthers finally have a replacement for Wesley Walls, whose last season in Carolina was 2002.
15. Pittsburgh – Patrick Willis, ILB, Mississippi
Comment: The Steelers love their linebackers.
16. Green Bay – Marshawn Lynch, RB, Cal
Comment: Ahman Green’s replacement.
17. Jacksonville – Reggie Nelson, S, Florida
Comment: The Jags will take a defensive player. The only question is who?
18. Cincinnati – Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh
Comment: The Bengals ranked 30th in total defense, including giving up a league-worst 238.6 passing yards per game.
19. Tennessee – Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee
Comment: Brandon Jones? Roydell Williams? Courtney Roby? Jonathan Orr? The Titans need help at WR.
20. NY Giants – Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn State
Comment: He seems to be the kind of player Tom Coughlin loves.
21. Denver -- Jarvis Moss, DE, Florida
Comment: Courtney Browns’ replacement.
22. Dallas – Anthony Spencer, DE, Purdue
Comment: The Cowboys could take Aaron Ross, Michael Griffin or a receiver, or they could trade down.
23. Kansas City – Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan
Comment: A year later, the Chiefs get Willie Roaf’s replacement.
24. New England – Michael Griffin, S, Texas
Comment: Strong safety Rodney Harrison is coming off season-ending knee surgery, and free safety Eugene Wilson is coming off a season-ending leg injury.
25. NY Jets – Aaron Ross, CB, Texas
Comment: The Jets need a corner to pair with Andre Dyson.
26. Philadelphia – Jon Beason, LB, Miami
Comment: The Eagles’ linebackers are growing old.
27. New Orleans – Justin Harrell, DT, Tennessee
Comment: The Saints need defensive help, and Harrell will help.
28. New England – David Harris, ILB, Michigan
Comment: Every one of the Patriots’ starting linebackers is at least 30 years old.
29. Baltimore – Ryan Kalil, C, USC
Comment: The Ravens need line help, and OT Joe Staley would be their first choice.
30. San Diego – Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU
Comment: The Chargers will have a receiver to pair with Vincent Jackson.
31. Chicago – Ben Grubbs, OG, Auburn
Comment: Three of their OL starters are over 30.
32. Indianapolis – Alan Branch, DT, Michigan
Comment: The Colts gave up the most rushing yards in the NFL last season, so they take a chance on Branch.
