NFL might begin neuropsychological testing this season

NEW YORK -- The NFL could implement neuropsychological testing of all of its players by the start of the 2007 season.
In a meeting with The Associated Press sports editors Thursday, commissioner Roger Goodell said the league is concerned about concussions and is discussing ways to prevent them.
The league’s medical committee has suggested the mandatory neuropsychological testing as well as forcing players to properly snap their chin straps.
“We want to ensure that players are as safe as possible,” Goodell said. “At no time should competitive issues override safety issues. Safety comes first.”
Goodell added the league is trying to protect “the players against the players,” referring to players who try to rush their returns from concussions.
