Dolphins' Fiedler says he will start Sunday

Staff and Wire Reports

Miami quarterback Jay Fiedler said he'll start Sunday against Buffalo despite missing practice time this week because of a cracked rib.

Fiedler aggravated the injury Sunday in a 24-10 loss to New England and sat out the end of the game. He missed practice Wednesday but returned Thursday.

Sammy Morris will become the fourth player to start at running back this season for the winless Dolphins, replacing Leonard Henry. Morris has been slowed by an ankle injury and a concussion and limited to 8 yards in five carries this season.

Commanders hurting

Washington linebacker LaVar Arrington and kicker John Hall were ruled out for Sunday's game against Chicago.

Arrington (knee surgery) will miss his fourth consecutive game.

Hall strained his groin during practice Thursday. It is his third leg injury of the year, following hamstring injuries in the first two games. The Commanders are expected to sign kicker Ola Kimrin today. Kimrin was with the Commanders during training camp and was on the practice squad briefly.

The Commanders on Friday also downgraded cornerback Andre Lott (hamstring) and kick returner Chad Morton (knee) from probable to questionable.

Desperados sign Stoerner

Clint Stoerner, a backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys from 2000-02, agreed to contract terms Friday with the Dallas Desperados of the Arena Football League.

The Desperados also agreed to a contract with Chris Greisen, who played four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Stoerner and Greisen will compete with Scott Dreisbach for the starting quarterback job.

Stoerner played three seasons with the Cowboys, two seasons in NFL Europe with Amsterdam and Scotland and had two brief (preseason) stints with Miami.

While with the Cowboys, Stoerner played in six games and started twice.

Also Friday, the Desperados claimed wide receiver/linebacker Brian Robinson, a former standout at the University of Houston who played with the Detroit Fury last season, with the 21st pick in the AFL dispersal draft.

Briefly

• It appears likely that Lions Pro Bowl cornerback Dre' Bly and rookie running back Kevin Jones will play Sunday against Green Bay. And there is a good chance rookie wide receiver Roy Williams will also play, although he did not practice all week because of a sprained left ankle.

• Jacksonville has lost both starting defensive ends for the season. The Jaguars placed Lionel Barnes (shoulder injury) on injured reserve. Barnes hurt his shoulder Sept. 19 against Denver. He missed one game but returned to the starting lineup against Indianapolis. He did not play Sunday against San Diego. Paul Spicer, who started the first two games opposite Barnes, was lost for the season because of a knee injury.

• Seattle's Tom Rouen (strained right hamstring) punted poorly in practice, and coach Mike Holmgren said he will decide today who will punt Sunday against New England. Kicker Josh Brown could do double duty.

• St. Louis quarterback Marc Bulger practiced and showed no ill effects from a bruised shoulder he injured Sunday against Seattle. Defensive tackle Tyoka Jackson (pulled left hamstring) has not practiced all week because of a pulled left hamstring and said his chance of playing Monday against Tampa Bay was "less than 10 percent."
