Grading the 'Boys
Offense
D+ The Cowboys simply didn't get anything done consistently against a tough Commanders defense. Running back Julius Jones was held in check (22 carries, 81 yards). And aside from a gadget play, quarterback Drew Bledsoe and the passing game were nonexistent. The Cowboys also were undone by three holding penalties.
Defense
D- Late defensive lapses in the secondary not only ruined an expected shutout, but they cost the Cowboys the game. Aaron Glenn allowed Santana Moss to get by him twice for scores, making a five-sack performance inconsequential.
Special teams
B Jose Cortez made field goals of 41 and 33 yards. He also had a miss from 41. Punter Mat McBriar helped the Cowboys dominate field position with a 47.6-yard average on five attempts, including a long punt of 58 yards. Kick coverage was excellent
Overall
D The Cowboys had a chance to join the Buccaneers and Giants as the only undefeated teams in the NFC. But they suffered a meltdown against the Commanders, who snapped a nine-game losing streak at Texas Stadium.
Play-by-play
FIRST QUARTER
The Cowboys drove 47 yards on their opening possession to the Commanders' 24, but Jose Cortez missed a 41-yard field-goal attempt. Washington also moved into field-goal range on its first possession, but on third-and-8, Mark Brunell was sacked by linebacker Dat Nguyen for a 12-yard loss. The sack pushed the Commanders out of field-goal range, forcing a punt. Two plays after a Cowboys' punt, Terence Newman intercepted Brunell on the final play of the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
Beginning at the Commanders' 33 after the interception, the Cowboys picked up one first down before Jose Cortez made a 33-yard field goal to give them a 3-0 lead. The Cowboys had another scoring opportunity near the end of the half. Roy Williams' hit on Ladell Betts forced a fumble that was recovered by safety Keith Davis at the Commanders' 36 with 18 seconds left. However, an incompletion and a short reception by Patrick Crayton ended the half.
THIRD QUARTER
The Cowboys extended their lead to 10-0 on a trick play. Running back Julius Jones took a handoff from Drew Bledsoe, ran toward the line, then flipped the ball back to Bledsoe. Bledsoe threw deep to a wide-open Terry Glenn for the touchdown. The play covered 70 yards. It was the longest completion since 2002, when Quincy Carter threw a 78-yard TD to Antonio Bryant against Arizona.
FOURTH QUARTER
Jose Cortez's 41-yard field goal pushed the lead to 13-0. Then, the Cowboys were stunned by two touchdown passes. Mark Brunell threw a 39-yard touchdown to Santana Moss on a fourth-and-15 play, then hit Moss again on a 70-yard touchdown. Both scores came in the final four minutes. The Cowboys reached Washington's 42, but a fourth-and-4 pass to Terry Glenn covered only 3 yards.
