Listening to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones talk about his plans for the NFL Draft that goes live from New York this p.m. -- despite ongoing legal wrangling, he sounded so sensible, so prudent, so very not himself.

He sounded like an actual GM.

OK, he had his Jerry-isms going, run-on sentences and open verbal doors for every scenario, except taking a QB, and a few "wait, that is not" statements. Yet almost everybody walked away feeling like he was poised to eat his football vegetables, either staying at No. 9 and taking USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith or moving down for Boston College's version in Anthony Costanzo.

And I hate sensible Jerry.

If ever there was a year to go all in on Jerry being Jerry, this is the year. My advice is to trade up however far to grab LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson, a player many list as best available.

As in better than Cam Newton.

Better than Nick Fairley.

And better than A.J. Green.

If ever there was a year to go all in on Jerry being Jerry, this is the year. My advice is to trade up however far to grab LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson, a player many list as best available.

As in better than Cam Newton.

We need 2 offensive lineman, 1 defensive lineman, 2 safeties and at least 1 more conerback to even sniff the Conference Championships. Better to trade down and fill some gigantic holes....

Our safeties are Sensabaugh, and Huff once the rules to the new FA get worked out. Two offensive linemen? One might already be on the roster. Patrick Peterson fills the cornerback need.

That leaves one offensive lineman and one defensive lineman by your estimation, and all of free agency along with the remaining picks in the draft to address it.

I could see trading up from 40 as well. But if we do, I think we'll trade down from 9 as the the extra pick will help in the trade up.

Part of me would love to get Peterson, a great talent and possibly the next Charles Woodson.

But another part thinks, what if we do?

Newman is likely sent packing and we end up with a 'net' of Peterson for Newman.

I don't know if that would be considered a gain, loss, or push?

But I think if we go offensive line, many of the candidates will give us better production than Colombo was able to.

You just can't look at it that way. Most rookies, even eventual superstars, don't make a huge impact their rookie season.

Schefter was saying just now on ESPN radio that there are several teams in the top 10 looking to trade down. If that is the case, it drives down any bounty the Cowboys could get for trading down. If anything, the Cowboys need to stand pat or trade up, if they think the value is there.

Newman might get released for cap purposes, but I suspect he'd be re-signed the very next day. He wants to be here and he loves the team. He's too good just to simply let walk away.

But I think if we go offensive line, many of the candidates will give us better production than Colombo was able to.

Thats what I think too. Neglected for too long and as you say, there are alot of guys who could be significantly better than Colombo was last yr or would be now.

No way I give up draft picks this year to move up for Peterson. You don't need the superstar CB (and no one knows that he'll be that) in order to win.

If you want a CB, take one, just not the first one. If you want OL and DL, then move down or stay put and take em. This year the draft is deep, very deep in starter quality rated players on DL and OL. We can find starters and improved depth throughout the first 4 rounds.

Either sit tight and take Smith, or move down a little and take another RT and add picks and more players.

We must come out of this draft with at least 1 quality OL, 1 quality DL, and 1 quality DB...hopefully, we'll get an OT and OG and an ILB.

One super blue chip CB who weighs 220 lbs and may not be able to cover the quicker receivers and may have to move to safety, even though he may be a HOF safety, doesn't put this team over the top. Don't give up draft picks; simply take OL and CB, in any order, with first two picks, then DL after that.

If several other teams are also looking to trade up (to slots above us), then the price to do so goes up accordingly (calling the value factor into question), does it not?

Unless Peterson drops past AZ at 5 (and maybe even down to 7), I cannot see Jerry paying the price to go up and get him.

Crazier things have happened, but I cannot forsee the combination of a top-3 talent and one of the most critical positions on the field (CB) dropping down that far.

So, my best guess (which along with $5.00 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbuck's) is that the draft comes to us at #9.

Now, at that point if Jerry can find a trading partner in NE or STL, I think we find ouselves at #14 or #17, picking OL (Castonzo) or DL (Jordan, Quinn, Bowers, Watt).

If we cannot find a dance partner at #9, then OL Tyron Smith will have a star on his helmet.

That doesn't put me too far out on a limb, I know, but it seems like the vibe we get from the Front Office this year (think about last year with all the hype/buzz about Dez) is very straghtforward/no-nonsense (as would be the scenario outlined above).

Kinda reflects the personality of our new head coach, right?

I completely disagree that we are far from that day! No we are not. We were a coach and coaching staff away from that day. But that void has been filled very nicely. Caught ya off guard didn't I? Ya got to think outside the box. Do you think those Patriots' teams were just so much more dynamic than the rest of the NFL? NOPE!

They had a very good coach and a very good coaching staff that made those successful Patriots' teams smarter, tougher, and just better all around. So that theory that we should not go after a can't miss player by trading up is flawed.

A good coach can do wonders for a team like the Cowboys. And I along with many others believe we have that coach and staff ready to turn this thing around in a big way.

So if Jerry decides that we should move up at whatever cost to get a can't miss player that comes around once every 10-plus years like Patrick Peterson, then by all means, go for it Jerry!
