FWST: Jason Witten's replacement? Cowboys land Stanford TE Dalton Schultz

I just don't get it. This team plays its best when it's smashing people up front, but people want a WR at TE who's going to get manhandled in the running game. I think more people need to adjust their desires and expectations to what's actually good for this team.

Outside of the Patriots, very few teams win in January with a predominantly pass catching TE and even Gronk CAN block exceptionally when asked to. Ertz MIGHT be the only predominantly receiving TE to win anythinf and he had Celek to do the blocking most of his career.
I think it’s because fans have a different idea of what’s good for the team. We watched Witten start to erode into a guy who was a catch and fall type of guy over the last few years. We want a TE to put pressure on the defense the way guys like Ertz, Gronk, Graham do.

This guy worries fans because he looks like an unproven version of what we just lost. The 1992 offense where we need to beat our man and struggle all the way down the field with every pass and every yard contested is tired.

Don't be so sure. This guy is tailor-made for Dak AND Zeke. Dak is good on the short and intermediate passing and I think he will quickly become one of Dak's favorite targets. Along with his blocking....

To be sure, we'll have to see what he does in live action before coming to great expectations. One profile that I saw terms his routes predictable and monotonous. Witten was anything but that. Anyhow, he'll get his chances to prove himself in TC and beyond. I only hope you're right, though. His blocking should be OK from what I've seen of him.

Well someone has too!

So true. I'm fairly confident that Schultz's blocking will suffice. As for his receiving skills, I'll be hoping his development greatly helps his cause. Who knows, maybe Rico will be able to help out somewhat in the passing game. I read where Garrett is trying to convince Witt to stay, also.

I think Shultz can be a good receiving TE once he gets some experience, plus his blocking should only get better after adding more weight.

I like David Wells play too. A bigger player than Shultz an et shows n how he wins blocking on th edge. Wells could be th best run blocker DAL has.

Swaim, Jarwin, Shultz n Wells are a solid group to develop. No big names just like th WRs, so no one to key on yet...everybody has something to prove.

To be completely honest I have no clue who Stanfords QB even is?

If Witten in the end choose to retire I think Swaim will be his immediate replacement. I would expect to see Schultz get limited playing him his rookie season but the burden will be put on Swaim to go out and do the job.

I appreciate your honesty. We have other guys here who clearly don't watch much college football but are pretending they know players based off reading some "expert" opinions online.

Keller Chryst started most of their games last season, but was replaced by KJ Costello in November.

He’s more Hanna’s replacement than he is Witten’s. Even then I expect it’s even money that Jarwin gets that job and this guy is injury insurance.

Just go back and watch his 2017 tape. He doesn't make a lot of grabs, but he made some very big/important ones. He has that same unusual knack for getting open that Witten does. I really think people are going to warm up to this pick really quickly. He's also a charismatic hard worker who is going to pancake some backers. Bank it.

I like him . He was well coached and they said his playing time was limited because there are a couple 1st round prospects on the team - I don't know anything about that.

Stanford has been a run first team since Andrew Luck left. I can see how this guy got underutilized. I hope he is the answer. Witten was more than a YPC punch line.

22 catches? He must not get open that often. Run heavy offenses rely heavily on the TE in the passing game. Fumagali was much more productive and available.

Stanford knows a thing or two about TE's, there's a reason why he wants used in the passing game.
