NFL NOTES

'Pacman' gets his chance to explain brushes with law

WIRE REPORTS

Every emotion Adam "Pacman" Jones has seems to bubble to the surface.
The Tennessee cornerback smiles and kids with a reporter during practice and laughs with teammates.

But consider what happened his rookie season when teammates put up a sign outside the locker room that said, "Pacman Jones Wanted! For skipping out on club dues." Jones, who was getting $13.5 million in guaranteed money from the Titans, owed $500.

Surrounded by cameras and reporters, the then 22-year-old started screaming and cursing, yelling at the equipment managers to get him clean socks.

Jones' brash self-confidence and dazzling speed put him in the NFL and made him a millionaire. But it's his quick temper, poor judgment and a disdain for authority that have put his career at risk.

Since being drafted in April 2005, he has been arrested five times and questioned by police in 10 incidents. Last week, Las Vegas police recommended he be charged with a felony and two misdemeanors for his role in a Feb. 19 strip club fight that led to a triple shooting.

Today, Jones and Cincinnati receiver Chris Henry, one of nine Bengals players arrested in less than a year, are scheduled to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who has promised to hand down discipline within 10 days.

Jones' attorney, Manny Arora of Atlanta, said Jones is prepared to fight any league punishment legally, especially if Jones were to receive a one-year suspension.

The Titans hope Goodell will make a decision on Jones before the draft and are planning for the possibility Jones won't be around.
Briefly
NFL preseason: The Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears will meet in the preseason, a Super Bowl rematch highlighting the NFL's exhibition schedule. The Bears-Colts game will be played Monday, Aug. 20 in the RCA Dome in Indianapolis and will be televised by ESPN. The Aug. 9 exhibition game scheduled for China in August was postponed by the NFL, which said it wanted to concentrate its "global resources" on next October's regular-season game in London.
Browns: Safety Mike Adams signed a two-year contract, adding depth to the secondary. Adams had 67 tackles in 16 games with the San Francisco 49ers last season.
Cardinals: Arizona helped fill a big hole on the offensive line by signing free agent Mike Gandy to a three-year contract. Terms were not disclosed. Gandy started all 16 games for the Buffalo Bills last season.
Colts: Indianapolis defensive end Darrell Reid was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana, police in Freehold, N.J., said.
Commanders: Punter Derrick Frost re-signed with Washington. Frost averaged 42.9 yards per punt last season, with a net average of 36.7.
Texans: Houston re-signed eight players, including defensive back Dexter McCleon.

I'm so tired of hearing/reading about Pacman, how many Bengals have been arrested/had run-ins with the law and recently about the player who assaulted a pregnant woman. If these guys want to enjoy the benefits of playing in the NFL, then they gotta adhere to certain rules or get out.

I don't care if some believe they are a microcosim of today's society. Most of us work for companies/employers who wouldn't hesitate to bounce us out the door if we had repeatedly run-ins with the law or embarrassed them.

Hope Goddell (?sp) starts the process of getting this situation under control and I don't care what legal action their attorneys threatened to take. He can start with at least suspending them for half of season, huge fine (not the measely amount you normally see) and ordering them to return "x" amount of money to their team and a real good serious threat that future activities will end their careers.

Let the lawyer rant untill he has a stroke. They have no case. When he signed a contract with the league he agreed to abide by league rules and accept league discipline.

Heck if you want to be part of society there are rules that you should adhere to. These guys get to the point they feel they are above the law because they can throw around the big money. Until the NFL get serious not much is going to change. My hope is that some where down the line a 3 strike rule in enacted and on the 3rd strike you’re gone from the NFL. As far as I’m concerned enough is enough
