The easy way to give out the game ball for the Cowboys victory today would be to simply hand it over to the defense for stepping up when we needed them most - but I want to be a little more specific and give it to just one player.
To find the difference maker, all you have to do is look up at the scoreboard to see who that was today. Our team won by four points, that's a difference between scoring a fg or scoring a touchdown (followed by kicking the extra point). That's why I'm giving Roy Williams the game ball. If you recall earlier in that drive, Brad Johnson was throwing jump balls in T.O.'s direction - coming up empty each time. I was telling my son that Johnson was throwing to the wrong receiver if his strategy is to place the ball in a way that the receiver has to out-jump the defender. I then mentioned it was Roy Williams forte' if the play calls for the receiver to out-hustle the defender for a jump ball in the endzone. I'm pretty sure that Chris Simms would back me up on this if asked, based upon the number of times he did this same type of play with Roy back when both were playing for the Longhorns. On athletic skills alone, I give the edge to Williams over T.O. for his jumping ability and having better hands coming down with the ball.
I suppose credit should also go to Jason Garrett for calling the play but in the end (as everyone knows), credit's only given in the execution phase of the play rather than the planning. But kudos anyway to JG for recognizing the advantage Tampa was giving us on that crucial play that was key to our victory.
You also know that JJ is smiling since he got a little vindication on his part for having made the deal to get our latest version of Alvin Harper to compliment our new Irvin (T.O.).
Here's hoping those two can have the same success that the real Irvin and Harper had back in the glory days of the 90s.
