Game-clinching PI in the endzone

There was 2:08 left after Jourdan Lewis’ INT, Cowboys ball at the Saints 16.

Saints had 1 timeout.

On 1st down, Zeke ran for 2. Sean Payton chose to call his last timeout with 2:03 left.

That was a mistake on Payton’s part UNLESS he’s so diabolical that he called the timeout in order to force Dallas into passing. That’s unlikely. If you’re the Saints, you probably wanted Zeke to run into a stacked box instead.

The timeout with 2:03 left allowed Dallas to pass the ball instead of running it on 2nd and 8, since the clock was going to stop at the 2 minute warning regardless.

Give Linehan/Garrett credit for recognizing this and taking advantage. I was worried that they’d hand it to Zeke with 2:03 left, but they trusted their QB.

Great decision by Dak to take the shot into the endzone to Cooper. Pass interference, game over.

Had we run the ball instead and settled for a FG, the Saints would’ve gotten the ball back down 16-10 with about 1:10 left.

Nice sequence there to end the game. It started with a mistake by Payton and we made him pay.
Not too often that we are on the receiving end of these HC errors.
Usually on the giving end.
Nice change !!!

You have to give credit to the official who made that call. A lot of times officials go into "let'em play" mode at the end of a game, because they can always defend a bad no-call by saying the officials shouldn't decide a game. This guy actually did his job

I couldn’t believe the flag came out. It wasn’t even THAT blatant of a PI, to be honest.

The slow-mo replay showed Cooper’s arm being grabbed, but in real time it didn’t look like much.

I sat thru Colin Cowturd comparing Dak to Tebow...of course it was a negative spin on it. Someone might want to show game tape pf Dak at Pitt in 2016 and MAYBE many other games that year where he torched teams. Tebow couldn't carry Daks jock passing...two different cats totally. Colin must be on something.

Dak has passed for 400 yards in college and is a way better running threat than folks think. He showed this last night. Dak has the heart of a lion in crunch time.

Both Brees and Payton faltered at key points in the game due to pressure. They made bad decisions and cost their team the game. This is precisely the reason why you apply pressure on a player/coach/team.

How was that a mistake by Payton? I think every coach will take the timeout before the 2 min warning. It saves the most time.
I was a mistake because that 3 seconds isn't nothing in the grand scheme of things. Like OP said if they don't call a to they probably run knowing Garrett and probably kick a fg unless they got a first giving Brees another chance.

Sometimes what the right thing to do in a given situation isnt clear and you take a risk. Payton took a few risks in the game (going for it on 4th on the goal line) that didnt pay off. If it did, he is a genius and Garrett is an idiot again today. Football is that cruel, like politics.

No, they talked about this on the post game show. By calling that time out, it was basically a free play for Dallas.
The time out saved 3 to 5 seconds.

They said most coaches would have not called the TO.
Mistake on Payton.

If Garrett did this, I bet many would be screaming for his head, includong you,
I would have. Especially in hindsight we all do the double standard thing.

It wasn’t the right call... because it gave Dallas the opportunity to throw a pass on 2nd and 8 without the potential downside of an incomplete pass stopping the clock.

Which ultimately ended the game.
Wrong

You always call the TO BEFORE the 2 minute warning....saves the most time

Tempting DAL to pass is the bait .....it is always an option regardless of the TO situation.... it greatly increases the chances of a turnover.... a sack and fumble or INT are brought into play..... as we just saw in the 2 prior plays by Dak and Brees

The mistake was the PI not the call

The early timeout saved all of 3 seconds.

Sounds like you wanted us to hand it to Zeke with 2:03 left, which would have been a terrible decision.

Bad things can happen on run plays too.

Not as much as passes

3 seconds can be the difference......it matters

But it took away the run and gave an opportunity to pass without effecting the clock
Had he waited and stopped us it would have forced a FG
He would have had 40 sec less time but only needed a TD to win

no it is stupid in that there was a timeout at 2 minutes regardless. He gave us the ability to throw a pass with impunity.
