He only had 10 rushing attempts and 6 receptions in the 2015 preseason.

He is big 6-3, 226; however, he didn't really run like a power back. He did get outside and 1-on-1 against a DB and pushed him back a few yards but generally he more often lunged forward into contact while leaving his feet instead of keeping his feet and powering forward.

Oddly he reminds me of a bigger but slower version of McFadden. He probably has slightly more wiggle than McFadden but he's a similar upright, straight line type runner or he was in this limited sample. They both seem to be susceptible to shoe string tackles and both tend to lunge into the line leaving their feet.

I didn't see him in any pass blocking situations.

He looked comfortable catching the ball but he's obviously not a Dunbar replacement.

There an old article that indicated that he was an excellent special teams player in his limited time in college. I'm sure that the Cowboys would like their 3rd RB to be a significant ST contributor. The coaches made some comments after Dunbar's injury about him being one of the top ST players so there is an opening there.

Maybe he'll be a better fit in the Cowboys blocking scheme than he was in Seattle but he's not the type RB I expected to see them add to the 53. He didn't play much in college so he does have some possible upside with time and coaching.

From his college Head Coach:
We probably won't have him back.' Not a bad guy, just struggled academically, didn't do much."

Meyer said there's no chance Smith will return to the team, but he will remain on scholarship and the team will work to keep him on pace to graduate this summer.

Smith played sparingly in the Buckeyes' win over Penn State on Saturday night. He had 101 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries this season, and finished his career with 549 yards and eight touchdowns.

Sweet -- just what I like, a big back who runs soft. I have faith that they see something in the guy though. Again, ready to try anything. Keep throwing things against the wall and see what sticks.

Standing in Ohio State's team meeting room after practice on Wednesday night, Meyer is holding a remote with a laser pointer in his hand, the red dot on the screen at the front of the room highlighting Ohio State senior Rod Smith.

"One thousand four, one thousand five, one thousand six ..."

Meyer says Rod Smith earned a standing ovation from his teammates when this film was shown to the Buckeyes. He mentions that twice.

"Is that unbelievable?" Meyer asks, his eyes not leaving the screen.

Meyer first brought up the block during his Monday news conference, calling it the play of the day. Meyer made the point, as he has before, that excellence on special teams is rewarded with playing time on offense and defense.

Seattle must have saw something good on tape. And Seattle has been a pretty good judge of talent lately.

I think this speaks more about next year than this year and also insurance against another RB injury. Next year McFadden, Randle, and Dunbar most likely will not be Cowboys. That leaves them with Christine Michael and Rod Smith and Gus Johnson for next year as the only RBs with experience under their belt as Cowboys. Yeah, we will add a RB or two or three in the draft and FA. If McFadden or Randle were to get injured sometime down the road this year then Rod Smith would be better able to step in.

Thanks for the overview.

This is a move that continues to baffle me. I see plenty of better uses of that roster spot than this guy.

Does he have calves? If so, any resemblance to McFadden should end. Well be just fine.

Is it possible they would use him in the role that Hanna plays? End of the line blocker? Maybe Hanna is hurt more than what is being said in the media.

Maybe they needed an "over the top" goal line specialist with his lunging/diving ability.

Bottom line can this guy help us or not ?

how would we know, we dont even know if the team is going to use him. So far they just like giving away picks or picking up players that they dont use correctly. A few they picked up that was wrong fo the team. So we dont know if hes going to help teh team or just collect a check.

I would rather see Gus Johnson running the ball than this guy.
He has never produced anything. This signing is bizarre.
