For those who find themselves concerned with such things, the Cowboys won their exhibition finale, 21-14, over their downstate rivals from Houston, the victory snapping their preseason losing streak at eight games.

Still, regardless of the fact that the sparse crowd went home happy, this game was less about the final score and more about rounding out the final few spots on the roster.

In reality, there were only a handful of players on the proverbial bubble, but they certainly got their chance to shine. All of the Cowboys’ projected starters on both sides of the ball spent the evening resting comfortably on the sidelines, the most important objective of the night accomplished – the key pieces to a successful 2015 campaign remained healthy.

Only a few who put in regular time last season, such as Gavin Escobar, Mackenzy Bernadeau and Kyle Wilber, saw action tonight, as did 2015 first-round pick Byron Jones, although he spent most of the game playing safety and only a little at cornerback.

But again, this was about those players fighting for roster spots, and of that group, some gave the coaches food for thought (think defensive line), while others, well, not so much (offensive line).

Perhaps the biggest question marks coming into the game were 1) would the Cowboys keep a third quarterback this year? And 2) if so, would Dustin Vaughan or Jameill Showers earn the honor? Vaughan, who was with the team last year, played the entire game and completed 11-of-20 passes, but they went for only 115 yards and he finished the preseason with no touchdown throws.

And although he appeared on special teams throughout the game, that fact that Showers saw no time behind center led some to speculate that the Cowboys might be trying to hide him from other teams in order to sneak him onto the practice squad. We shall see.

Vaughn is garbage, but so is Weeden. A Browns cast off QB as our back up? This is pathetic. I'll be praying for Romo everyday.

I did not get the game here in New England. I know the bubble players. I feel the ones who make the team deserve it.

Good teams routinely take advantage of poor franchises poor player development program. It doesn't always work but I wouldn't use a bad development program as the basis for not bringing a guy in. We don't have that problem. Last 4 years we have been money developing talent on both sides of the ball.

Development? Weeden is almost as old as Romo.

I am still shocked at how much better Tebow was tonight than he used to be and over Barkley....hands down looked better than Weeden/Vaughn/Showers

I hate Tebow. But if he came into Dallas as a backup I'll jump on his bandwagon for sure. I'm pretty embarrassed to see what we have at the QB position. This goes for our RB position as well.

Previously, I had been extremely concerned about the DL's run plugging ability. Not so Thursday night. They were highly consistent in shutting down Houston's running game. The pass rush was steady and excellent all night long. I couldn't have been more pleased with the performance of our defense. They exceeded all of my expectations. Here's hoping the ST units perform as well (and maybe even better) than they did Thursday.

Many of them played surprisingly well -- but then, their jobs were dependent upon it. The staff will get it right.

Anyone can improve. He was 28 when he came into the league and Cleveland has had one of the worst player development programs in the NFL. Finally being taught in an effective environment will help anyone of any age. Old dogs don't learn new tricks is an excuse and not reality.

There are old dogs, and then there is Weeden. Seriously, you're white knighting Weeden?

White knight? SPare me your asinine characterizations. I operate on objective truths.

Was Dez beating Peterson's single coverage?

Was Leary injured and struggling to block Calais Campbell?

Was Parnell struggling early when replacing Free?

Was Murray able to make people miss and overcome the struggles of his oline?

Did the defense give up 4 TDs and over 375 yards of offense?

Have we developed multiple probowlers on offense?

I don't operate with childish characterizations. Try harder.
