The Dolphins coaching staff has another opening as the Dallas Cowboys have hired quarterbacks coach Jason Garrett to be their offensive coordinator – for now – according to a report on ESPN.com.
It's not immediately clear whether Garrett, 40, is still in line for the head-coaching job to succeed Bill Parcells, who retired on Monday.
According to a source, the Dolphins gave the Cowboys a noon deadline today to decide whether to hire Garrett for the coordinator role or else he would be made off-limits and have to honor the remaining year on his Dolphins contract. That forced Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to act quickly and hire his former backup quarterback (1993-99) or else risk losing him.
Garrett left the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., Wednesday morning to begin a battery of interviews that included Jones, his son Stephen and Parcells at Cowboys Valley Ranch headquarters in Irving, Texas.
Although he never threw a pass for the Dolphins, Garrett did finish his 12-year NFL career with them in 2004 before coaching the quarterbacks for the past two seasons.
Garrett's father, Jim, was a longtime scout for the Cowboys, and brothers' Judd and John played briefly for Dallas. Judd is the Rams tight ends coach and John is the assistant head coach at University of Virginia.
The Cowboys have asked and been granted permission to interview San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips for the head-coaching job.
According to the Cowboys team Web site, Jones also interviewed their secondary coach Todd Bowles, passing game coordinator Todd Haley and assistant head coach/running game coordinator Tony Sparano.
