Garrett asked about taking over play calling

Watching the Panthers game again its clear that being better on 1st downs will go a loooong way into fixing this offense.

We were in 3rd and long a lot this game.

If teams are so focused on Zeke on first down then throw in some QB keepers.. Something... But first downs are critical to Dak's success.

Garrett was an awful OC. Not an improvement.
to be fair he did have Romo calling the plays so we do not know what exactly was called because romo would go off script. You could be right, he called dumb play and room saw something and changed it.

And those freaking holding penalties. As soon as this offense was in any king of long yardage, it just went into its shell.

Or. Here is a thought. How about a draw play?

The problem is they are playing against crowded box, unless they can complete passes behind it no team is going to back off on 1st and 2nd down.

Exactly what play do you call for Dak?

RPO every down?

10 personnel (they never utilize this formation)
More hurry-up
Crosses & rubs
Designed runs
Get the RB involved in the passing game
More Spread
Bunched receivers
Get Tavon more involved

Anticipating you response that Dak can't make any throws, but it's untrue. He has issues with pressure--serious issues. He has to get better here. But the coaches are doing nothing to help him and get him in a rhythm.

This wasn't an issue for his first 24 games.

He couldn't be as terrible as he has shown.

Also, when the playbook basically got scrapped and we are in the 2 minute offense and he's just playing football out of the spread he was effective and we moved the ball.

First downs will be critical and maybe be a little more up tempo early to get him settled is the way to go.

Some Zone reads to start the game may take some pressure off teams focusing so hard on Zeke too.

He also should have ran with the ball more. He just looked rushed and indecisive. A couple of the zone read plays he could have kept and got a lot of yards.

I think that this staff knows he would be hard pressed to play majority out of the spread because running plays are not in that part of the play book and he would have to dissect coverages because teams would game plan nickel and dime and disguise coverages.

nothing against your thoughts but talking about a NFL qb needs more zone reads makes me want to puke.

Garrett has already proved he's terrible as an OC.......actually he's below average at every NFL job he's ever had............maybe he could take over the cheerleaders....he could teach them how to clap in unison......maybe

Crossing routes should be a staple for our team.

Michael Gallup had all the space in the world to operate if Dak could've delivered that ball.

TO and Dez should've had 4 or 5 crossing routes a game thrown to them but, ya know, Garrett.

Yeah but it's the way of the NFL now days.

Dak has shown he can be a highly efficient QB throwing so the fact he can zone read is a bonus.

When I think of Dak at his best he's a better Alex Smith. Alex Smith is good at those zone read plays.

There was a lot of stagnant offensive series during the JG playcalling years. It always improved when we went hurry up and Romo went off script. I think that's what lead to the supposed "Romo-friendly" offense. That was just code for, our OC is an idiot, but the owner loves the guy for some reason.

yep more crosses, bunch, rub, slant and drag routes. Zeke is our only true weapon, need to get him more involved in the passing game with some short flare and wheel routes, maybe some shallow drags too. The occasional screen or emergency dump offs are not enough, needs to be integral to the passing game.

Even the elite offenses have stagnant series. Remember they are plying against guys that get paid also. The hurry up works because teams have a much more condensed playbook they can call because of lack of substitution. I would not be surprised if a hurry defensive playbook only has a dozen plays depending on the personnel stuck on the field at the time.
