ARLINGTON – After the Dallas Cowboys’ victory Sunday in their NFC East opener against the New York Giants, coach Jason Garrett gave the game ball to Dallas tight ends coach Mike Pope, owner Jerry Jones said.
Pope was let go by the Giants after the 2013 season. Pope was a part of all four of the Giants’ Super Bowl championship teams. He coached with the Giants during two stints, from 1983 to 1991 and from 2000 to 2013.
Pope’s pupils played well against his former team. Tight end Jason Witten had two catches for 27 yards and second-year tight end Gavin Escobar had his first two-touchdown game for the Cowboys. Escobar finished with three catches for 65 yards.
“He spent a lot of time in New York,” Witten said of Pope. “You try to say it’s never personal, but I think for him to come on the other side and have success and win this game meant a lot to him.”
