T.Smith, D.Murray, D.Bryant, S.Lee, B.Carter, Mo and hopefully Crawford, Hanna and Johnson. All home grown and talented. Out with the Newmans, Barbers, James and R. Williams. Next draft a pass rusher and a QB to groom and were going to be good for a long time.

I'd like to see some talent at O-Line be brought in as well. Costa and Arkin aren't gonna cut it

Next draft - big bodied NT to rotate with Brent, dynamic punt/kick returning RB, pass rusher, the rest should be OL and let the best ones stick.

i want to agree with you and the younger talent is improving but make no mistake this team's best players are mostly veterans.

i like the mix this season and it could end up being special if we get folks healthy. it's ironic of course but getting healthy is key to our depth.

dez, mo, sean lee, tsmith are big time studs. doubt anyone can argue otherwise. but romo and ware are the best players on this team.

NT isn't really a need. People fretted that this draft but we got plus play at NT this week with Ratliff out injured. We like both Brent and Lissemore. If we drafted a NT we end up cutting someone we really like.

OLINE, OLINE, OLINE. Draft me some OLINE!!!!!!

JG & JJ [yes JJ] are getting this team ready, not just to compete now, but make a long run, as the Patriots did, setting up for multiple SB possibilities.

Next year is year 3 of a 3 year plan to revamp this team, acquire young to mid range talent levels, with a few older players mixed in.

If the OL gets to be much improved, it will open up a lot of possibilities to what is needed to get better. I think the target next year, in combination will be OL obviously, but as I mentioned, if these guys look good, it won't have to be a high priority as it should have been [to us fans] as this year.

He's not home grown, but Carr -- the second or third best player on this defense -- is only 25.

I agree. But Lee and ware might have something to say about it.

I debate internally whether he's a better corner than Lee is a linebacker. They're both very good, so I don't really care who comes out on top.

THIS. Most of the other pieces are in place on this team. Defense is good and skill position players are great. Fortify the trenches and dominate!

Imo:
Garret's strenghts are bringing in the RKG, doing what he can to stay young and how he runs training camps.
Garrets vastly underrtated as a play caller. He actually does a pretty good job. He like Romo has to manage a poor OL. Sometimes you're handcuffed. See the last series of lasts years Pats game.
Garret weakness is game management. Not calling a time out last year, still frustrates me. I was half drunk on a bar stool not able to hear the broadcast, I jump off my signaling and hollering TO! TO!. If my drunk idiot arse knew that how did he not.

I tell you this if the OL holds up and Garret improves at game mangement were making noise. He aslo needs to be a strong HC and keep Ryan in check in certain game situations.

The drafting seems to improve also. More Team captain types and not reaching for need. The arrow is pointing up Cowboy Nation!!

Jerry Jones truly squandered an incredible opportunity when in a couple of drafts he managed to find Romo, Witten, TNew, Ware and Ratliff in years 2003-5. He had himself All-Pro pass rusher, franchise QB, All-Pro NT, #1 CB and an All-Pro TE. Most of them were young and cheap. All we had to do was keep replacing the vets with new recruits.

But then came the disastrous drafts of 2006-9 and the RW11 trade. He squandered that golden chance to build an elite team by being unable to execute in talent acquisition and managing contracts of aging players. Then lo and behold the 2010 season comes along and our talent isn't so superior to other teams and we get whipped 1-7 to start the season. And everyone wonders what happened to the Cowboys talent - well it got old and didn't get replenished at key positions along the OL and secondary. Poor coaching didn't help matters any. But people were still under the delusion that our talent was so much better than anyone else. Then comes the 2011 season after a good couple of drafts and we start to show some promise again but now those players we acquired 2003-5 are aging and getting up and around 30. People wonder with the new kids why we aren't dominating and the issue is the team's core should have been built around those guys 2006-9 hitting their prime but that core group was weak and flawed. All we had to show for it was Hatcher, Free, Spencer, Jenkins and Felix now. 3 of those players probably won't be on the team next year and many people think Free is so overpaid that he'll be released next year.

Anyhow that's all in the past now. Hopefully the vets from 2003-5 can continue to play well for a few more years while the kids from the 2010-12 drafts mature and hit their primes. We're also lucky that Romo is still healthy, at the top of his game and is willing to play 6 more years. But we need to keep executing in the draft, UDFA and FA so we keep letting the old players go before they fall off a cliff We also need to avoid overpaying vets who are not premium players, especially as they hit their 30s.

This past offseason looks like it is a good one. The OGs acquired played well this week although the Giants aren't particularly strong at DT. Carr played well at CB most of the time but did get beat deep 3 times with 2 resulting in big plays. Claiborne played quite well for his debut although he needs to attack the ball more when he's in position. Silva looked good out there for a rookie. Ryan Cook did well filling in during a pinch. Garrett filled out his staff with quality hires in Henderson and Callahan. One weak unit coach still needs to go but this is a top notch group of coaches he has collected here. We now just need to keep the formula going and not mess around with things and get too cute with projects and backup drafts. I really think one more great draft and we can be elite - all we really need now is a better Center and a pass rusher to step up to that next level of domination.

great post.

I definitely think we need to focus on the offensive line next year. We don't need to groom a young qb right now. Even Orton isn't that old. That mentality doesn't make any sense.

I would draft almost exclusively offensive line in the first 3 rounds next year. Obviously dependent on what is available. Second priority would be defensive line.

Only exception I would make is for an elite pass rusher, which I don't think we're going to be in position to get.

It's time for QB to groom. Next year is deep deep at QB.

I think it will need to be a great QB after the first round for us to bite. The problem we have is that Romo wants to play quite a few more years and we have an elite veteran backup QB who can step in for a few games if Romo gets injured. At the same time we have a contending type team now that is ascending after 3 great drafts and we desperately need another edge pass rusher.

I know Garrett will make a good choice when he sees a QB he wants. The two that he has apparently liked were Andy Dalton and Colin Kappernik who both look very good in their second years. I don't know if there is anyone he really liked in this draft.

I give him credit for that. He has built us a nice little team.

By the way, it's Stephen and Ciskowski building the core.
