No info to pass along here, just me reading the tea leaves and speculating.
I couldn't be happier. He'll shut the naysayers up in 2009 when he has a healthy Offense and a full off season to work with some of the new weapons.
Breakdown of why I believe he is staying.
With Shanahan wanting to take 2009 off I don't think Jerry is in any kind of hurry to change anything else on the coaching staff. That includes Wade, which I think was a possibility if Garrett left. Wade is still going to need a LB Coach when Herring officially accepts the Oklahoma State DC job.
Candidates? I think Jim Bates might be.
The Jets look like they are going to go Rex Ryan. They didn't interview Garrett anyway, so it wasn't a likely destination. They may still go Steve Spanuolo, but like Garrett, he is very highly paid and I think that makes him harder to hire. Both will want pay rasies from their current salaries.
The Rams are leaning towards Leslie Frazier. Spagnuolo may also be a candidate. I think that is a really good hire BTW. This is the last place Garrett could land and at this point I think it is highly unlikely he will.
The Colts, Seahawks, Lions, Browns, 49ers, and Broncos all have their guy in place.
That leaves the Raiders and the Chiefs if Pioli changes his mind. What can you say about the Raiders? What a friggin' mess. Last year when Al Davis wanted Lane Kiffin to resign he was going to make Charlie Joiner his Head Coach. He hired Joiner anyway and put him on Kiffin's staff. Now he has fired Joiner and isn't retianing Cable and is losing his entire coaching staff.
No way Garrett would take that job. Their only hope is to get a retread guy from the good old boy network like Jim Fassel and try again.
Commitment to Excellence? Naw. Commitment to Excrement. That is the saddest franchise in the NFL at this point and at one time they were one of the flagships. Sad really. Davis needs to retire. One of the great football minds ever, but it is gone now.
