It's very difficult to judge wave heights unless you are in them. I love boating and fishing and enjoy the rush of being out there when I probably shouldn't. I have never been able to capture the severity of the conditions on camera.

I have been knocked off the helm by a wave caught in the chest in my open, small center console boat. A MUCH smaller wave then this one for sure.

My boat would get pitch poled in a heartbeat trying to climb a wave of this size.

I didn't realize surfers get that messed up when they fall.
Sometimes they get driven right to the bottom and drug/pushed across sand, coral or whatever else is down there.

Been there, done that. Not a good feeling. I almost died once or twice on some nasty ten footers. Had to save a buddy of mine from drowning in some real sloppy 8 footers once. Surfers get a bad rep from other athletes, but i guarantee you there aren't many world class athletes from other sports that would **** themselves dropping in on a wave a quarter that size.

I love to surf, but big wave riding is not something I have any desire to do. Give me chest to head high and glassy all day.

I think this kind of captures it.

I was actually looking for footage from a bulk carrier looking down the length of the ship through a belowdecks passageway. You can see the ship twist, rise, and fall through the passageway. Then there's a "boom" when something somewhere gives way. I'll see if I can't find it, because its really interesting to watch.

Found it. Container ship, not a bulk carrier. Boom at :35.
