"Only 10% of people with herniated disc problems that cause noticeable symptoms eventually have surgery."

So it appears it depends upon the extent of the injury.

I'm in medical school, and I can confirm that a herniated disc hurts like all hell.

If it's ruptured, he needs surgery; which is my guess.

I have two ruptured disks in my lower back. It took about a year before the pain was gone. I didn't have surgery, but If I'm not careful in working out, or bending over, or sitting too long it can flare up. I've had a few times in the last 4 years where it flared up to the point where I couldn't walk for a few days.

I don't play professional football.

This is true. I have my L4&L5 discs herniated and you do have some discomfort. Managing weight and treating it are key. You're not treating the herniated disc itself, you're treating the nerves and muscles.

I'm a YOUNG (lol) 32 and every doctor I've seen wont recommend surgery since I'm still young.
