Garrett's challenge: Get mentally tougher

IRVING, Texas -- Jason Garrett told the Cowboys that he was proud of the approach they took during his tenure as interim coach. He appreciated their effort and intensity.

But Garrett also challenged the Cowboys. He wants a more mentally tough team.

“Line one of football is emotion, passion and enthusiasm,” Garrett said. “You have to play that way. You have to play that way collectively or you have no chance.

“After you do that, you start getting into poise, mental toughness, discipline to execute. Battle through some adversity, execute well at crunch time. I think when you evaluate those two things, I think we did the first thing. I think we did that consistently over the last half of the season. Regarding the second thing, I’m not so sure we did that on a consistent enough basis. Those are the things that we have to continue to work on.”

you dont hear Garrett being happy being 5-3 with back up QB's or saying we could of won 2 other games with alittle better defensive play.

Physically tougher would be good too. Break out the pads asap, dont think you can wear pads in OTAs and QB Schools.

no but i think training camp the pads will be :welcome:

I've said this many times, these guys are about to experience a Jimmy Johnson style TC. It's going to be extremely physical and mentally tough, our team will be in darn good shape next season and they will be tough. I look for us to run the ball very well with FJ and TC having big years. I'm so excited for camp already. JG knows what it takes to win....

And the cycle begins again.....This is how they get us hooked and pumped....sneaky NFL ......:laugh2:

But seriously, you can almost feel an excitement starting to build around the Garrett era beginning. I am starting to get excited as well, but I will temper it with the CBA thing and the see how the draft and FA goes. But man, we have the talent in the right spots for a monster year if we can solve the Oline and safety issues. DL does not need help, but if you can thats cool, but Oline and safety are our most urgent spots of need.

What d-line doesn't need help:eek: ......we need someone on the d-line that can actually get to the QB or atleast collapse the pocket

This team has plenty of talent and that includes the OL. This team was NEVER in top quality physical football shape all year long and it started with a crap TC by wade. It got better later when JG took over and put them back in pads and made them hit regularly. Practicing in pads develops a physical mentality thats needed to run the ball successfully and it gets you into good football shape. It's essential to a quality physical football team and JG knows that.

I am hoping the D coordinator makes the difference here, we saw Spencer bust a move 2 years ago, then nothing last year. Hes got the skills, just needs the right motivation, scheme, mojo, something. I dunno what worked 2 years ago that doesn't now, but I am hoping its not Spencer and more the system.

But certainly if you can upgrade Spencer, Olshansky and several others, do so, but dont ignore the Oline and safety positions. Or it will be 2010 all over again.

At the very least, Garrett clearly knows what the big problems on this team are. If he can fix them or not is still to be seen, but its a good start identifying the main problem with this team last season.

Whip this soft mutha humpers into shape JG. I don't know if its possible to instill passion and intensity into players, especially ones as heartless as these who quit on themselves and their teammates, but if it is possible i pray to God we start playing that way next season.

Bring it Red: I wish training camp was next week. Minus Jenkins, Bigg, Colombo, Ball, etc....

:hammer:

With the roster additions I'm expecting we should be a very good team next year.

I agree. JG is a Jimmy disciple. He saw first hand how good teams were run. Chalk this up to a great move by Jerry by seeing a plan early on, and sticking with it. It's Garrett's time.

Believe me, Garrett is going to have his say when it comes the draft and FA moves. I wish it was July already.

I agree!! I cannot wait till TC gets here, cause I know there will be some pads popping. I think JG will lay the law down and get them ready for the upcoming season.

I was one that thought that even though they did not show up for Preseason games it would be ok. Well, that has changed for me. Execute for the short time your in there and build upon it.

Oh there's no doubt about it, JG will have plenty say on who's on this team next year and JJ will get him everything he needs.

Apollo's Challenge: Get a new mantra for next year, the tie thing got real old real fast. And when Romo gets back, lets not pretend like we're the 2007 Patriots.

Do you not understand the importance of stacking great tie days upon great tie days?

I got his message and I really liked it at first.

But for a future President, mensa candidate, super genius like Garrett - I'm expecting better.

It was saracsm. It is getting old. He repeats himself more than anyone i've ever heard. I understand its intentional.. but its a little strange that its still going on, the same 2 or 3 phrases all year.
