RB fumbles chance to carry self like pro

Tiki Barber, already planning for his next career, got in his car every Tuesday morning during the football season and drove from his Manhattan apartment to a television studio in Stamford, where we sat on the set together for four hours every week for two years.

Not once during the taping of "This Week In Football," on the YES Network, did Barber give the slightest impression he thought I was an "idiot." Actually the perception was that he thought I was pretty smart, especially on the occasions when I would look over his "Tiki's Take" commentaries and make suggestions he appreciated.

But it was reported in the Daily News yesterday that Barber had called me an "idiot" on his Sirius radio show Tuesday night. I've had my share of disagreements with athletes and coaches and have always enjoyed the verbal sparring, but Barber was out of line. This came after he initiated a locker room confrontation with me Monday night in Dallas.

Barber never even flinched when I used to criticize him in the Daily News or on our show for his fumbling problem that could have ruined his career before the Giants hired Tom Coughlin and he gave him a new way to carry the ball.

This time, however, I apparently struck a nerve deeper than a root canal by claiming his retirement announcement last week would serve as a season-long distraction the Giants didn't need. Did I call him an idiot for unnecessarily making himself the story in the middle of the season and right before the Giants' biggest game of the year?

Of course not.

I never questioned his character, just his judgment. He's always been one of the good guys.

If Barber is going to make the media his next career, he must develop thicker skin. How will he survive in this business if he can't do it without resorting to name-calling? Can he criticize somebody on television without calling them an idiot? He will be smart enough to figure it out.

Barber and I exchanged several E-mails Wednesday. I told him I never thought he would stoop to the level of calling me an "idiot" for simply expressing an opinion he didn't like. He indicated he was referring more to ESPN's Michael Irvin and Tom Jackson than me, but in listening to the Sirius tape, he mentioned me first. I just want to go on record that I am not an idiot, although it is an argument I have with my wife all the time.

I began covering the NFL when Barber was 3 years old and can sense when I believe something will be a distraction. In this case, polling his Giants teammates on the Barber Issue, as he suggested should have been done, was not required, although I felt confident that trustworthy people shared my opinion.

Just tell me who this announcement benefited other than Tiki? His business manager, Mark Lepselter, is telling anyone who will listen that the networks are falling over themselves to sign up his client. By getting his pending career free agency out there, it increases his leverage. Barber insists he never wanted the news to be reported, but he is savvy enough that he could have controlled the flow of information if he truly wanted.

If the Giants are mentally tough enough to keep winning despite all the Tiki Talk, then maybe this will be a Super Bowl year. It's been All Tiki, All The Time since the story broke on Oct. 18, so it's fair to question whether Barber did the right thing. Can Coughlin really be thrilled about this?

Barber no longer does the YES show, but until last week, our television experience together made our relationship unique. I looked at him beyond just being an athlete and believed he viewed me differently than most of the group that surrounds his locker every day. He has been treated as well by the media as any New York athlete in the last 10 years.

He is not quitting on the Giants. Just watch him play. The issue was not whether his imminent retirement would distract him, but what impact for this season the news about the best player on the team would have on his teammates. It's too early to make that judgment, even after the victory in Dallas. He failed to understand part of the job is to express opinions.

Barber certainly has every right to walk away on his own terms. Not many football players leave before they are told to leave. It's just that his timing is off by announcing it midseason. He has done an incredible job setting himself up for his post-football life, putting in 18-hour days that start at 4 a.m. on his Tuesday day off and that should pay off for him. And somehow it has not affected his production on the field.

When I walked into the Giants' locker room at Texas Stadium after they beat the Cowboys on Monday night, Barber gave a sarcastic answer to my question as I stood alone with him. Then, he declared, "I have a big problem with you. You really hurt me."

He walked away. When he returned to his locker, I was talking to Jim Finn, who had the locker right next to Barber. I leaned down and told Barber I was sorry he felt that way and he knew how to reach me if he wanted to continue the conversation. I had 40 minutes until deadline and needed to leave. He decided to keep it going right then, in the middle of the locker room. His voice got loud, I defended my position and his voice got louder. He was making a scene.

To me, it was all part of the business, which any idiot would know.

Barber may run to MNF

In the space of a week, ESPN "Monday Night Football" analyst Tony Kornheiser has flip-flopped on whether he will return to the booth in 2007.

If Kornheiser does not come back to work with Joe Theismann and Mike Tirico, could Tiki Barber, who said he will retire from football following this season, move into ESPN's "MNF" booth?

Industry spies say ESPN brass is interested in Barber.

"We fully expect Tony to return next season and are very happy with our ("MNF") booth," said Chris LaPlaca, ESPN's senior VP/communications. "But any network involved with the NFL would of course be interested in talking with Tiki should he retire."

Even if Kornheiser returns to "MNF," ESPN has a number of platforms - including a variety of NFL studio shows - it could offer Barber.

Meanwhile, a network news source said ABC News is interested in Barber's services and likely already has reached out to him. The Disney Co. owns both ABC and ESPN.

As for Kornheiser, clearly, his "MNF" future will be open to weekly speculation. Last week, Kornheiser told the New York Post that because of travel issues he just might decide to bolt "MNF" after this season. Yesterday, in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Kornheiser reversed field. He said he was having "fun" in ESPN's booth.

"So," Kornheiser said, "I can certainly see myself doing it again next year."

Barber is really making an arse of himself here. If you're a public figure people are going to scrutinize your every move. Stooping to the level of calling the media names (though everyone may want to do it at times) just looks foolish.

2 out of 3 announcers former NFC east players? Why not just replace Mike Tirico with Merrill Reese and finish us off. Yeah thats what espn needs more dallas hate.

Last monday nights brodcast was painful to watch as a Dallas Fan. I saw more tiki then i did the game. Korn was talking about how 'evil' TO was, and look at him talking to the offensive coordinator, he must be angry. And the refs which ran into playmakers, called in the grasp on a completion, and missed dancing in the endzone. It just compounded into a disgusting game. Not to mention getting more controversy to give the talking heads things to yap about.

Gotta love it....I've always loathed Barber's incessant off field showboating, limelight hogging of the NY sports scene...and seeing him act like a twerp the first time a little criticism comes his way is a special treat.

As he enters a new 'team', that of the sports media, I suppose he will find that the same set of ethics applies on that squad...and that the mediots are similar to NFL players in their ability to close ranks.

Calling folks 'idiots' because they questioned his resolve doesn't reflect well on Tiki's supposed 'class' nor his ability to appy objectivity to his future journalistic career.

And for those who saw that "This Week in the NFL" segment this week, does anyone else agree Tiki came across as a supercilious little snot? The degree he seems willing to go to set himself apart not just from his fellow NFL players, but his fellow ex-NFL colleagues in sports journalism is already laughable. But by calling them 'idiots', he at least lets others know how high he's hoisted his own pedestal. His sense of superiority is tangible.

How ironic that with the remarks on MI's "character", he just brought the whole issue down to the level of the playing field, the neanderthalish environment he is so intent on 'escaping'.

Or maybe Tiki's just too dense to realize how foolhardy it is to try to straddle two worlds....announce your retirement when you actually ARE retiring, and not the week before a nationally televised primetime game, and you might get fewer negative comments.

I'm admittedly biased against him and all the other Jint media hogs, but even without the preconceived opinion on his endless self-promotion (Owens with half a brain, in my estimation), I'd have been convinced his announcment was purposefully timed for maximum exposure...which of course he got. To a sickening degree on Monday night.

He just didn't count on MI and a few others not throwing flower petals beneath his feet. :lmao2:

Enjoy the backfire, Tiki.

Right on, Herms...

And supposedly, Tiki's "Barber Shop" show on Sirius has had plenty of petty and classless comments over the last couple of years, too.

TIKI WON'T BE MISSED BY SOME IN NEW YORK

An industry source with knowledge of the New York Giants tells us that there is a group of players in the locker room that can't stand running back Tiki Barber.

"They say he's smug and condescending and complains a lot," said the source.

This reinforces our belief that, while Barber's stated plan to retire after the season isn't a distraction in and of itself, there could be a problem if the Tiki World Farewell Tour stokes the smoldering resentment that already exists within the building.

Meanwhile, Tiki is still using ten-dollar words on television. During a Thursday night appearance on NFLN's Total Access, he broke out the term "bloviate" regarding the folks who are criticizing him. (We looked it up. It's a term that's most commonly used by those who bloviate.)

Tiki, pal, you've got to drop the fancy-shmancy talk. It doesn't connect with the kinds of folks who'll comprise the TV audience you ultimately aspire to have.

And it reminds us of something that a good friend once said to his class of eighth graders when their vocabulary book included the term "supersensitive."

"If you ever use that word," he told the students, "people will think you're gay." (Not that there's anything wrong with it.)

He IS smug and condescending, and it will be hilarious seeing him no longer get a pass on his patronizing attitude.

Posted that just for you. Thought you might like reading it. :)

Whatever you thought about Irvin's and Jackson's comments, they get paid to offer an opinion. And TJ is right when he says that Tiki is being hypocritical in criticizing them for doing the same thing he does...offer an opinion.

I used to listen to Tiki do the football report on Imus in the AM in NY when I lived there. I catch him once in a while on the Barber shop. His brother is a genuinely nice person, a touch egomaniacal... but usually complimentary to other players and teams. However...

Tiki Barber is a fake. He is quick to assess a consensus opinion and appeal to it. He enjoys being thought of as an eclectic black athlete. I have never been of the opinion he is exceptionally bright. Tiki makes a trip to Israel and now he's an ambassador in his mind. Tiki stands before the media, now he wants to be Tom Brokaw. Tiki, this Tiki that. Tiki owns NY. Tiki in his Escalade commercial living the life beautiful.

Screw Tiki Barber. He is probably my least favorite player in the league. It's a coin flip between him and Eli.
