Joe Haden ran the underwhelming 40 time at the combine, putting his ability to cover an island in quesiton.
C Maurkice Pouncey, arguably the surest bet in the draft among Gators
Work ethic and character issues likely have pushed Carlos Dunlap into the second or even third round.
Aaron Hernandez has lost his first-round momentum while Brandon Spikes is too slow for the first day of selections.
Tim Tebow’s stock is rising, but he had so far to go — his starting place was third round at best.
Yep, the one Gator with first-round talent who came out blazing from the beginning and never relented was center Maurkice Pouncey, who apparently could be the next Nick Mangold.
Though Haden is still expected to be a top-15 pick, he entered the draft as a top-10 lock. Pouncey was labeled a second rounder in January but now could go as high as picks 15-18. Analysts call him a first-round lock.
“He has a chance to be as good a center as we’ve seen the last three drafts,” ESPN’s Todd McShay said.
The Sporting News says Pouncey could be the next Matt Birk but needs to improve his blocking technique.
After a recent spring practice a couple of weeks ago, in between individual team workouts, Pouncey said he’s not sure the NFL draft process could have gone better after leaving school a year early.
“I’m really excited about the way this turned out,” Pouncey said. “All my workouts have gone really well. I’m ready to make an impact at the next level.”
If you know Pouncey’s back story, you’ll be rooting for him on draft day. Read up on how the Pounceys are motivated by father Rob Webster, who lost his leg in 2008 during a work-related accident.
Pouncey plans to be in hometown Lakeland for the NFL draft coverage starting Thursday.
