I was very mixed on this game coming in, part of me is glad we played such a well rounded game. High marks all around. First complete game I've seen this team play against a good team in 2 years. I hope this doesn't galvanize the idea that Garrett should stay. It's one game, he's been here over 8 years...
It was the most creative I think I've seen on offense in two years. I was very pleased with what we were doing, though I have to wonder why it takes media pressure and an imploding season to get coaches to coach for their jobs.
I thought Dak played one of the best games he's ever played that includes 2016. That being said, I don't think he was elite by any means. At least not in the air. I think they let him play to his strengths, which is clearly the way they should have let him play all year long. I liked that he actually took shots downfield. He didn't rack up yards, but he made the defense concerned that they can get beat in other ways, and while they focused on Zeke, Dak did what he needed to do and made them pay.
That being said he coughed it up twice and had two passes that were nearly intercepted. The concerns are all still there with him. Also missed big on a touchdown on one of the plays where he coughed it up. Very lucky he was able to recover both.
I think we finally outcoached and outplayed an opponent, but much of that game was the Jaguars killing themselves. They looked like the Cowboys out there with their mental mistakes.
Defense continues to impress. There was no way the Jaguars were going to come back from behind. Similar to Dak, Bortles doesn't have that ability. I think bortles may actually be more pedestrian than Dak. Before you say I'm being too negative on Dak, despite his plays, he still passed for under 200 yards. You can beat Bortles like this, especially with Dak running. I don't think the Jaguars expected that, but teams will going forward. Can you deal with the Tom Brady's and Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees' out there? I don't know.
Big props to Jones and Jaylon. I was happy when we drafted him, felt like he would recover based on the medical reports, but also realized we weren't in a position going forward to take risks. Same story with Gregory who is really coming on. This defense could really be something next year, especially if we could finally get Sean Lee healthy. Eyeroll. Add Earl Thomas if he isn't franchised... I just wish we didn't have the ongoing drama with Irving who also played well. This line could have been something special with those linebackers and a secondary with Thomas... Truly think this would have been a top 5 defense. Technically, it already is.
Footnote: I still need to see more from him, but I may have been dead wrong on Maher.
