The quick summary of this game and of this team is that it just isn't a smart team. The killer instinct is never there with them.
We could have blown this game out very early, yet a very very dumb play in an obvious situation was made by Ryan Switzer. Kid is a 4th round pick and lost his team this game, but he was allowed to do so. How many people have mentioned that he plays around too much when he should just fair catch the ball. I called that fumble. He isn't a dynamic returner in the NFL. He isn't fast enough and you know he is trying to force things to justify his draft pick.
This defense is short on resources. They aren't a defense that can stay in the game 4 quarters and people shouldn't expect that, but key foolish decision was made in the offseason in not getting any safety help, which doomed this defense to poor safety play. Not great for a young secondary or for a bend but don't break defense.
This defense also wasn't built around stopping the run. If they have to do it for 4 quarters, it won't look pretty. They were built to play with a lead and go after the quarterback, but even then we lack the pass rushers to do this. The Charlton pick was one of the worst picks we've made in a long time.
Dak continues to boggle my mind. He is the checkdown king even on a 4th down play will go for a checkdown. Back to back checkdown passes on the last two plays of the drive. The only time he goes deep is on blown coverages. I'm sorry, but anyone who thought this kid was better than Romo was smoking some serious wacky tobacky. I put a lot of blame on Dak for Bryant's decline, but he definitely owns much of it himself. We need to take a look at that contract at the end of the year.
How we continue to get away from the run is insane. It was working so well, yet we decidedly get pass happy over and over again. I would look to trade Dez or cut him in 2019. He doesn't fit this offense anymore, not without Romo.
Marinelli was outcoached, but he doesn't have a ton of resources on defense. Garrett and Linehan continue to get outcoached week in and week out.
