GBN draft report(rumor) on Tyron Smith slipping in draft.

I have to lol at the "you don't take a RT that high" nonsense.

You take the best player that you feel is available that can help you out. The only positions out of the equation there would be specialists.

If Garrett and Co. feel Tyron Smith is the best talent for this team at #9, then I'm all for it. I don't care which side of the line he plays.

I hope we do take Smith at 9 based on my (very) limited knowledge of our needs, players strengths/weaknesses in the draft, etc.

But what would be interesting to know - and maybe we never will know - is how the Cowboys' scouting department/coaching staff rates Smith vs the other top OTs in this year's class.

I think that's one of the keys to determine how keen JJ will be to trade down and accumulate picks.

For example, if on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best), if T Smith ranks 9, where would Carimi/Solder/etc rank? If Costanzo (sp?) ranks at 8.5, for example, and the Cowboys think that is negligible in the grand scheme of things, then I could see JJ trying to trade down to the mid-teens for an additional pick or two.

On the other hand, maybe the Cowboys' brass think that T Smith is a potential Pro Bowl player while the other 3-4 top ranked OTs are potentially "good" players - and the Cowboys want a blue chip talent on the OL.

Maybe its just me but what scares me about Smith isn't work ethic or any of that stuff. It's who he played for.....USC. The weight and strength gains screams PED to me and USC has had a recent history of it.

I'm not saying he's juicing but I just don't trust USC.

If he had been a two or three year starter at LT, then I can see it. But #9 for RT doesn't make sense ot me. He may make it, but he will have to learn a new position to be worth #9.

Trade down and take a RT like Carimi or Costanzo.

Casserely said if he can not play on the LT don't take him - said he is a better than Trent Williams - Smith

If had played LT at USC for 2 or 3 years we not have shot at him he go top 5

This is an intriguing draft in many ways.

It reminds of the RW31 draft.

We draft high but may be better off with a trade down. RW31 was a great player before rules changes but Ed Reed was the next safety off the board and has been Hall of fame caliber player.

This is a deep OT draft and the next 3 or 4 guys after Smith may be better as rookies. They are all naturally bigger if with far less upside and potential.

Playing at 280 scares me because in the NFL these guys would destroy even a 300 pound OT. BUT, Smith may well end up 320 and a Hall of Fame caliber OT. A pattern of growth in an NFL weight program....

Tough call and one I'd rather not have to make myself.

The easy move is the trade down if it presents itself.

Not to tough a call for me JT, OL take time to mature more than any other position, intelligence and compatibility with the legacy lineman is also very important.

Castanzo is a tackle now, high IQ, great program tradition for turning out pro's, adequate size already---and most importantly will not be preverted by becoming an instant millionaire.

Whatever potential T.Smith has got after 1 yr. as a starter, the agent-run training mills are a big factor in enhancing a player between bowl game and combine, with weight gain an faster 40 times. USC has become notorious for this kind of player who has reached his potential the day he signs his first NFL contract, Reggie Bush,Mike Williams,Dwaine Jarrett, Matt Leinert anyone?

That's not a realistic take.

You do not take RTs very high because you have to pay the LT the big money already. RT and LT are NOT interchangeable no matter how much some people pretend that's true. Simply follow the money as it doesn't lie.

All that said 9 isn't 5. 9 is borderline for a special player at RT. And if you have a very good RT who is your backup LT and a Pro Bowl caliber guy 9 may be right.

Smith was a productive, underweight RT who looks to have elite athleticism. If he had dominated at the Senior Bowl carrying 300 pounds this would be really easy. But it isn't.

Lets see: worked like a fiend since the last game to put on 25 pounds. Increased his bench from combine to Pro Day.

Yet his off field work ethic is questioned.

This usually starts happening about two weeks for the draft. Stupid crap gets repeated until too many think its true. All the top choices get this; so in effect that just sets in stone the fact that Smith is now a top pick.

I hope we just trade up and get Peterson. Or trade down and get Carimi.

That 9 spot isn't a good spot this year.

Valid points.... Then again I wish we'd drafted Clay Matthews.

I do worry we need an immediate starter and have a window with Romo that isn't 4 or 5 years away.

I'd really like to not suck along the OL next year again.

I'd be tempted to trade down 7-10 spot and select Pouncey and then move up a few spots in r2 to get Derek Sherrod. I think they'd both start next year and be plus starters at RG and RT respectively.

Since he was not a senior he could not be there, you do know that.

This BS about money is just that. In the NFL in the years to come you are going to NEED bookend tackles. The rushers will be coming from both sides. So pay now or pay later. There is no Doubt that Smith could play LT some day. None. So what if we have to pay both. Smith is a better athlete than Free; so it is reasonable to think that in a few years it is Free at RT and Smith at LT. So you would be paying for LT no matter what. You do not draft GOOD ENOUGH at a position. You draft the best player you can at a position.

A Davis selected 11th overall in last years draft hes playing RT

Jason Smith 2nd overall in 09 is playing RT

Um, you do realize that Smith started for two years, right. If not it would be hard to take your opinion very sincerely.

I think Garrett has really done his homework. Whether it's Tyron or whoever, I cannot wait to see the Cowboys draft.

Definitely. Even if there were questions about his work ethic, do you think Garrett would take him if he didn't think it could be changed? This isn't the ho-hum regime anymore.

I don't think there is much of a margin in that aspect. Now strength always was an issue with Free, but he got better there. Free is an athletic freak.

Look at the numbers; Smith is a decidedly better athlete.

Would Tyron Smith be viewed as a top 10 pick if Dallas didn't desperately need a RT? If Dallas or whomever started the rumor that Dallas was looking at Smith, would he be viewed as a top 10 pick? I don't think he would be.

I don't know, I guess it depends on how is at 9 if Dallas wasn't. Would PRince have been viewed as a top 10 pick the same way. Also Fairley now is only a top 10 pick if the Titans take him.
Same with the QBs, none are sure top 10 players but teams need QBs.
Only players that are for sure top 10 players in this draft that doesn't depend on team needs are
Patrick Peterson
Von Miller
A.J. Green
and Marcel Dareus
maybe Julio Jones all the rest are based off of team needs.

… One gets the impression that USC OT Tyron Smith could also be slipping. There had been speculation that Smith may have vaulted himself into the top 10 with an outstanding pro day where he weighed in at 307 pounds, but still ran close to 4.9 seconds over 40 yards. Indeed, there has been speculation that Smith could be headed to Dallas with the 9th pick when Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett made his only pro day visit at Smith’s workout. Like just about every top prospect in this year’s draft, though, Smith has a few warts. He played at barely 280 pounds in college and there are concerns whether he’ll be able to maintain his current weight over a long, grueling NFL schedule; Smith also played only RT in college but is being considered as a top 10 prospect as a LT; plus Smith is still very young - he won’t turn 21 until late in his rookie season and there have been questions about his maturity and off-field work ethic. Whether those concerns are enough to drop Smith remains to be seen, but he has four late on-site visits scheduled next week and three of them are with teams picking in the second half of the opening round. Smith, who has already visited with Cleveland, Dallas, Minnesota and Indianapolis, will be in Washington in next to visit with the Commanders who have the 10th pick, but will also be at New England, the Giants and Tampa Bay, which pick 17th, 19th and 20th respectively. Again, on-sites are an imperfect measure of where a player stands, but its also true that teams don’t like to waste their time in the days before the draft so Smith’s status may be something to watch over the next couple of weeks….
Weight and age the primary concern? That's a plus in my book. At least he hasn't killed anybody.

I agree, which leads in to the point I am trying to make. If he's really not a top 10 talent, then we should not be stubborn about taking him at 9. If he's another of 8 or 10 other players with relative rankings, then we should take advantage of our situation and move down if a good offer is made.

He could be "slip sliding away" into the late teens or early 20s at this rate.

The way it's starting to play out Dallas could trade down to 14 and still land Tyron Smith if they wanted him.
