2010 DRAFT BUZZ:
THE LATEST SMOKE AND MIRRORS FROM AROUND THE LEAGUR

April 20
One of the prevailing thoughts regarding the upcoming drafts is that there may not be as many trades as there have been in the past. Certainly, if there is no new collective bargaining agreement by next week, or if an injunction to end the current lockout is not granted, there won’t be any trades involving veteran players. Tennessee G.M. Mike Reinfeldt, though, thinks that there may still be plenty of movement at next week’s draft. Speaking to local media at a pre-draft presser, Reinfeldt said that he wouldn’t be surprised if there were actually more trades than usual. Reinfeldt, whose Titans have the 8th pick overall in this year’s opening round, also indicated that he has already received a number of calls about the pick, but doesn’t expect the phones to get really busy until the draft actually gets going.

Same story for New England coach Bill Belichek who reported in a recent interview that the Patriots have also received considerable interest in each of the 17th, 28 and 33rd picks that the team currently owns with teams calling to see if the Patriots are interested in moving up or back. In fact, most analysts expect the Patriots, who usually lead the league in draft-day moves to be busy again this year. Needless to say, Belichek didn’t give too much away in the interview, but did hint that the ability to evaluate defensive front-seven talent will be a key to success in this year’s draft. Indeed, one of the storylines of next week’s draft will be whether the Patriots feel they will be able to upgrade a somewhat anemic pass rush sitting tight with their current picks or whether they will have to move up to get into the fix one of this year’s top defensive ends or rush LBs …

And while veteran trades likely won’t be part of the mix at this year’s draft, there is growing speculation that Washington will move QB Donovan McNabb to Minnesota once a new CBA is in place. That could impact the draft as the Vikings, which have the 12th pick overall, have been focused in on QBs in the pre-draft evauations and had been thought to be a candidate to either trade up for a Blaine Gabbert should the former Missouri get past Buffalo and Cincinnati at the 3rd and 4th picks, or trade back with the idea of acquiring one of the second-tier QBs. There had been reports that the Viking had settled on Washington’s Jake Locker as the best fit for their offense, but could probably get him 10-15 picks lower than #12. However, if in fact the Vikings have some kind of deal in place with the Commanders to acquire McNabb - and it would probably not cost them much more than a 3rd round pick in 2012 - then the Vikings would be freed up to look at other positions such as DE or OT with their opening round pick, although it is still possible that they would look to add another developmental QB with a later round selection …
