2010 DRAFT BUZZ:
THE LATEST SMOKE AND MIRRORS FROM AROUND THE LEAGUR
http://www.gbnreport.com/draftbuzz.html
April 17
Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino has come out publicly denying that QB Ryan Mallett ever tested positive for drugs, (although it should be noted that testing positive and using aren‘t necessarily mutually exclusive). Rumors that Mallett had drug issues made the rounds earlier in the year and contributed to the drop in his draft grade. Petrino also added that Mallett doesn't have character issues, although the Akansas mentor did say that Mallett, who was arrested for public intoxication in March of 2009, did like to have fun. That could give NFL teams pause as they recall former USC and Arizona QB Matt Leinart, the failed 10th pick at the 2006 draft, who was known to really enjoy the night life.
On the other had, Pittsburgh‘s Ben Roethlisberger, who already has a couple of rings, has never been known as a shrinking violet after hours. Of course, Mallett’s stock also tumbled for on-field reasons. Indeed, Mallett is very limited athletically, has been thought to panic in the pocket when pressured question, and has questionable leadership intangibles. However, he also possesses arguably the best pure arm strength in this year’s draft and his stock appears to have recovered enough hat it is no longer inconceivable that a team like Miami might not take a long, hard look as early as the middle of the opening round… Hottest player out there these days could be TCU QB Andy Dalton who appears to have moved into the second tier mix at the position along with Mallett, Washington’s Jake Locker, and Christian Ponder of Florida State
