(5:00 PM): UGA OLB declares for draft ... According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia junior OLB Justin Houston has applied to the NFL to be included in the 2010 draft. Houston, who figures to be a 3-4 edge rush LB at the next level, figures to be a late first or early second round selection this coming April.

(4:00 PM): Nothing doing as deadline passes ... We could be corrected here but we believe the deadline for underclassmen to file paperwork with the NFL to be included in the 2011 draft passed at 4 PM ET today. And so far, other than injured Alabama junior SS Mark Barron officially confirming that he will be back in school next fall, nothing much has transpired today to date. That doesn't necessarily mean that no further players applied to the NFL as they technically don't have to announce anything prior to the deadline, just get the paperwork in. Indeed, every year when the NFL releases to actual full list of juniors eligible for the upcoming drfat (usually a day or so after after the second dadline to withdraw applications expires) there are always several names included of obscure college players who have opted to try their luck such as it is with the pros.

As noted earlier, though, for the most part, though, just about all the top prospects have already spoken up with almost 50 having announced they will be turning pro this winter. The NFL, though, has been waiting to hear from a number of prospects including Georgia OLB Justin Blackmon, TEs George Bryan of North Carolina State and Michael Egnew of Missouri, Florida State OLB Nigel Bradham, and North Carolina DT Quinton Coples. Once the deadline has passed this afternoon, players who did apply to the NFL for inclusion in this year’s draft have a 72-hour window of opportunity to withdraw their application if they have not signed with an agent or received any benefits.

(12:01 AM): A&M WR, Tide S returning to school … At least a couple of players the NFL had been waiting on have reportedly opted to stay in school. Texas A&M junior WR Jeff Fuller, who had seriously considered entering the 2011 draft, has instead decided to return to school for his senior season. Meanwhile, Alabama junior SS Mark Barron will reportedly announce at a presser later this morning that he will be returning to school for his senior season. Barron had a chance to be the first SS off the board this coming April, but has been set back by a torn pectoral muscle suffered in Tide’s final regular season game.
QBs back in school … Houston QB Case Keenum has been granted a medical hardship waiver that will give him a 6th season of eligibility next fall. Keenum, who is already ranks fifth all-time in NCAA history in passing yards, had his 2010 season end abruptly with a torn ACL in Houston’s third game of the year. Keenum was granted the extra year because he had earlier taken a redshirt year because of a shoulder injury. Meanwhile, Florida QB John Brantley reportedly will stay in Gainesville for his senior season. Brantley, who was never a good fit in the Gators’ spread offense, considered transferring after struggling through a disappointing season in which completed 61% of his pass attempts for over 2,000, but had more picks (10) than TD passes (9). Brantley, who many considered to be a better pro prospect than former Gators’ QB Tim Tebow whom he replaced this fall, hopes to get a fresh start under new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis.
