WEDNEDAY practice notes ...

Bad news of the day is that emerging Mount Union WR Cecil Shorts, one of the top small-school prospects in the country was forced to leave the field with ice taped to his right hamstring. Speculation is that he won't play Saturday which is a tough break for the guy trying to make a splash on the national stage..

Overall the QBs, with the exception of Wisconsin's Scott Tolzein are under-throwing their receivers resulting in multiple interceptions. Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor in particular looks very unsure of his progressions and holds the ball way too long in the pocket. At the same time, there appears some divided opinions on Delaware QB Pat Devlin. A number of scouts really like what they have seen from Devlin, but I just haven't seen it yet; Devlin is shorter than advertised and lacks the prototype arm strength of a near-elite QB prospect. Meanwhile, Texas A&M QB Jerrod Johnson has looked tentative and is not throwing with authority or volume. He needs a god sports psychologist to help him get over the A&M benching.

Richmond CB Justin Rogers had a very nice morning practice including a leaping interception of a slightly under thrown ball in front of LSU CB Terrance Tolliver. While he didn't get that one, Tolliver was extremely smooth and fast and has shown good hands both days.

Clemson OT Chris Hairston is a huge physical specimen at 6-6, 330 who has looked more athletic than I expected that he would. In fact, he reminds me of another former Clemson OT Barry Richardson who started for Kansas City most of this season after going undrafted a couple of years ago.

Lehigh OG William Rackley is another small-school player who has helped himself this week. Indeed, Rackley continues to run with the first unit at RT where he has more than held his own. Rackley is very light on his feet and has good lateral movement, but still needs work on using his hands better in pass protection.

Southern Methodist WR Aldrick Robinson reminds me a lot of former teammate Emmanuel Sanders, now with the Steelers. While not big, Aldrick caught the ball well today and ran away from defenders with his superior speed. He looks like a solid 5th or 6th round pick who can help a team needing a return specialist and #4 WR.

Portland State TE Julius Thomas continues to impress with his route running and receiving. I also saw him execute a nice seal block; not bad for a guy in just his first full year of college football after playing four seasons for the Portland State basketball team..

......

UConn FB Anthony Sherman is a lot quicker and shows better burst as a runner than you would expect from a guy who checked in at 5-10 and 245 pounds.

North Carolina DT Marvin Austin continues to look good at times and off at others. He looked a bit gassed today as temps approached 80, although no one is going to hold it against him as he hasn't suited up since the fall.

He's no world beater but LSU OT Joey Barksdale has looked a lot better to me these two days than he did at times in SEC play. He's holding his own at LT and he's a fit 6-5, 335-pounds.

And good news for our very northern friends as Queens OT Matt O'Donnell had a nice recovery today after a poor day yesterday. He wasn't outstanding but looked like be belonged on the field.
