I did this on ancestry.com with their 14 day trial period.

I traced all my grandparents, and on my dads side I traced my grandfathers family all the way back to 1529 in Paris!
Man, that is amazing. Maybe I was just doing something wrong, because I found zero results every time.

I got lucky. I had two other relatives, who I actually dont know...they were second cousins of my father, who had done a ton of stuff.

that site will link you to other profiles when you confirm people in your family. So I confirmed they were my relatives and then traced some of their stuff.

I was like 8 generations back of my great grandfather in 1529 in paris. It was pretty strange. They moved to nova scotia, then back to paris then back to canada!!

that site was pretty cool but I am not going to pay for it! I found both my grandfathers enlistment papers into the navy during world war II, which was really interesting.

naw it really takes some getting used to - it really tough to use I been going to the my library once a week for a couple of hours just to get used to using it - but like theebs says I would never pay for it - unless you really want to get into it

Not really into it but could see how it would be neat to trace your roots. I work with a guy who is a 12th generation American and has traced relatives all the way back to the Mayflower landing.

Did you just type surnames in and wah-la? Or did you have to know more than just that?

I'm just trying to figure out the best place to narrow it down.

I found my parents first, then my grandparents.

I confirmed it was my grandparents by viewing the census records.

once you have that confirmed, you can search other parameters about them on that site. That is how I found my grandfathers world war II enlistments. I couldnt find my fathers military records at all though, so it must be hit or miss.

I have a friend who actually told me about this a few months ago, who has been tracing his family. He was back around the 1600 or 1700s and found all kinds of documentation about a family member who was like a personal guard of the king of england!

So I think it is just hit or miss. I got lucky because I had distant family members who had already spent alot of time searching really far back into my families history and I just linked to them and then double checked.

I had a hard time finding my moms fathers family. I know they are straight from wales and my grandfather was first generation american but I couldnt find census records or anything to confirm who was who.

so it must be hit or miss I guess.

Dang. Cuz my family on my father's side are immigrants. Just don't know if it was after the Famine or Early 20th Century.

My family is probably from humble beginnings anyways because my father and grandfather were self-made men that rose from relative poverty to being quite wealthy.
