Poor production this past year could have been a good thing for us in getting George Bryan as an UFA. If I remember correctly, I thought this kid was talking about being a 3rd round pick after his junior year. When Russell Wilson was the QB @ NC State Bryan was a beast, and RW's go to guy like Witten is to Romo. His hands are really good. I am a huge State fan, and I don't know why, but when Mike Glennon replaced Wilson he rarely looked at Bryan even though he threw underneath a lot. I think this kid could make the team and be a player.

In 2011: A preseason second-team All-America pick by Lindy's, that publication also named him to its first-team preseason all-conference team ... Also a first-team preseason all-league choice by Blue Ribbon ... Named to the preseason 'watch' list for the Mackey Award for the third-straight year.Recent News

Norm had Bryan on his sleeper list heading into the draft for that exact reason. When NC State lost Wilson, Bryan became almost exclusively a blocking TE and his receiving production dropped off. Still, he had 17 TDs in his career, so he's a redzone target as a blocking TE.

I certainly hope he makes the team. Could be a great pick up one day.

Wouldn't surprise me if he makes the roster over Hanna. Just something I can see happening.

That's what I was thinking.

Phillips is going to have to show a lot this TC, imo.

At least Hanna is a rookie, has upside, and has something the other backup TEs don't offer, which is the ability to stretch the middle of the defense with his speed.

Bryan is a good blocker, sure set of hands.

I think Phillips has to show he is more of a complete TE this TC - because he doesn't have Hanna's speed and Bryan probably will end up being a good blocker as well (and is cheaper).

Not saying that Phillips can't do it, but I think he'll have to show something more this year.

I heard Garrett say in one of the press conferences that Hanna will be used primarily as the F-back in the offense, I for one like that pick and I think he will make the team and he does need to work on catching the ball better and if he does that then he has everything else to be a very good TE in the league.

Just finished listening to Cowboys Lunch Break and they were talking about this pick and Eagleton, doesn't like the pick and how he isn't that much of an upgrade over Phillips my thing is alot of us and even most at the Cowboys home site was clamoring that the team get another TE that can stretch the field and Hanna brings that element some are never satisfied with anything.

I'm guessing Derrick hasn't seen that clip of him where he takes off for 50 yards and a touchdown AFTER catching the ball.

He was on a few mocks to us as a draftee late.

Much more a traditional TE than James Hanna but without the unique physical gifts.

I guess we could make run for four TE's on our team........right?

Well, before the QB and offensive change last year Bryan was preseason 2nd team ALL AMERICAN for a reason.

Well, now that Buehler won't be taking up a roster spot, maybe!

I think he better fits what we expect from our tight ends: strong blockers who run smart routes and settle into openings and have reliable hands.

Hanna runs much faster and is more of a receiving threat, but his inconsistency and suspect blocking might give Bryan the edge.

Dallas didn't draft a tight end until the sixth round. I think that is a pretty good indication of how they feel about Phillips.

They are obviously willing to upgrade (as they tried to do with the Chicago tight end), but don't feel it's a pressing need.

It had more to do with nothing much available after Fleener.

I love Hanna's athleticism. Could be a major threat if used properly. I'm not opposed to carrying 4 TE's if we have a clue on how to use them. At this point I'm not really sure Garrett does.

True. If we could keep two kickers and two punters on the roster, we can keep 4 TE's.

Like I said, I'm sure Dallas would have upgraded if the right opportunity arose. But the fact that it was not a pressing need to upgrade shows that the Cowboys are comfortable with Phillips as the No. 2 tight end.

I'd be surprised and happy if either of these new TEs showed the promise Phillips has so far. No doubt, if they do, they'd be able to push him, but realistically, they're both competing for TE3 this year.
