Sci-fi filmmaker hurt by harsh feedback from some fans about the prequels

By David Eckstein
Zap2it

For any fans awaiting future "Star Wars" films from George Lucas, it's going to be a long wait. The creator of the famed series says he's not going to make any more of these movies and that he's essentially retiring. And for that he blames the harsh feedback from certain fans...

Maybe if he listened to people like Spielberg who tried to tell him how terrible some of his ideas were he wouldn't be so butt hurt now.

The prequels sucked bad, the end, I only saw them on TV because I knew it was going to be bad. I think he should be happy about how much he ripped off the Star Wars cult fans and has their money. Anything he possibly would have made in the future I would have been very skeptical about. Only movie maker I would regard as making crap for the masses more is M.Knight.

I actually liked Episode III: Revenge of the Sith but disliked the first two prequels.

I somewhat agree with him. He started it with JarJar, but the herd mentality took over with the bashing afterwards. The movies where nowhere near as bad as some made them out to be. They definitely had entertainment value.

While the three prequels were not made in the same mold as the three original movies, there were still good movies. (with the exception of the terribly annoying JarJar Binks)

Though, most movies no matter how good generally have at least one thing you do not like about this. At least after the initial JarJar backlash in the first movie, they toned him down a bit in the following two movies.

If you were a fan of the original series and say they sucked you are either (A) herd mentality dog-piling, (B) way to freaking much of a purist and not taking the movie for what it was. Entertaining SciFi movies.

btw. The prequels are not far off of Return of the Jedi's mold with the Ewoks. The Starwars IV and Starwars V were far more serious than Starwars VI. The Ewoks were goofy just like JarJar. Some people seem to overlook that even though it is extremely relevant to "what they hate" about the prequels.

I thought the story was weak in the prequels and they attempted to satiate the audience with cliched nostalgia. I never have been a Star Wars person but it was just silly and never loved any characters.

I will say I disliked the new Star Trek revision too, mostly because it did some of the same nostalgia throwup for no reason thing. I actually thought as a standalone the new Star Trek was a decent movie, but as a Star Trek fan that loved most of the other movies it was just crap in the Star Trek universe.

The prequels were written back in the 80s right after Return of the Jedi was released. It wasn't something they developed just prior to making the first movie in 1999.

I'm sure the germane idea was back then, I would be surprised if it was like the way it was presented now.

I don't believe it. Lucas knows Star Wars makes money. Lots of money. If he needs/wants another big haul, he will make another Star Wars movie. Of course he has to get through re-releasing all the previous films in 3D first. If he goes through another divorce in his lifetime(I don't know if he is currently married) then expect a new movie shortly after.

Jedi was/is criticized for the Ewoks.

Yes, but a majority of the complainers say that the prequels screwed up the Starwars legacy and mention nothing about Return of the Jedi. Actually, at the time hardly anyone really complained about the Ewoks. I remember all the kids in school all talking about how "funny" they were.

Was Return of the Jedi a bad movie? No. I don't think any of the movies were bad.

The biggest deal is most people don't like change. Especially "older people". Most people watched Starwars when they were kids and then 20-30 years later and seeing a new version of it and hate the fact that "it changed".

This inability to accept change is why a lot of "older people" that do what I do for a living get pushed out. Technology demands change, and if the person implementing refuses to change, the have to be pushed aside.

It's a movie. Accept it for what it is and judge it on it's own merit. Not on some movie released 30+ years ago in 1977.

That's like blaming Jews for the Holocaust.

lol. This is both asinine and can be made relative if you word it properly.

No, actually the prequels just sucked. (Except for the last one.)

Yeah? What exactly sucked about them besides the fact that they weren't xerox copies of the first three?
