Georgia is preseason No. 1 ahead of USC in coaches' poll

ESPN.com news services

Georgia was widely considered the hottest team in college football at the end of the 2007 season.

A panel of Division I-A coaches remembered, voting the Bulldogs the preseason No. 1 in the USA Today Top 25 coaches' poll, released Friday.

Georgia garnered 22 first-place votes in the poll, with No. 2 USC and No. 3 Ohio State each receiving 14 first-place votes. Oklahoma, with three first-place votes, and Florida, with five first-place votes and returning Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Georgia finished No. 2 in the final Associated Press writers' poll and No. 3 in the final coaches' poll last season.

The Bulldogs and Gators, SEC East and regional rivals, meet Nov. 1 at a neutral site in Jacksonville, Fla., while Ohio State and USC meet Sept. 13 in Los Angeles.

Georgia's schedule also includes visits to No. 16 Arizona State on Sept. 20; defending BCS champion No. 6 LSU; No. 11 Auburn; and South Carolina.

LSU, Missouri, West Virginia, Clemson and Texas rounded out the top 10, giving the SEC and Big 12 three teams each in the first 10 poll positions.

Auburn was ranked 11th, followed by Wisconsin, Kansas, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, BYU, Tennessee, Illinois and Oregon.

South Florida, Penn State, Wake Forest, Michigan and Fresno State rounded out the top 25.

The SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten each had five teams represented in the poll. BYU of the Mountain West was the highest-ranked team from a non-BCS conference.

The AP preseason Top 25 poll is scheduled to be released Aug. 16.

I like Georgia but nobody has the talent USC and Florida does right now.

USC's defense this year is going to be one that we'll be talking about for a long time.

Florida just has the jack of all trades at Quarterback, a great receiver, and some nice looking RB's with a tight end thats a tough matchup.Talent Talent Talent on this team.

Plus both teams may be the most well coached in College.

I think Georgia has a better QB and RB than either school.

But it's all quibbles as they are all extremely good.
USC had a ton of talent last year as well and just didnt always execute. I am also not sure they are so well coached minus Norm Chow developing their offense and especially their QBs.

The one thing I grant USC that always goes a long way is they have the much easier conference to try and run the table in. But the key for them will be winning early season games against Virginia and Ohio State. Lose either game and then they have a real tough task of going clean through the Pac-10 and all their rivals including many on the road.

As a Texas Tech fan I can not wait to see them play this year. They return the entire defense and all the impact offensive players-- including the best WR in the country. They also have a quite easy early schedule that should have them ranked top 10 in a few weeks after the season starts.

Knowshon Moreno is my pick for the Heisman, and the QB, Stafford, is underrated. They are my pick too, and "my team" since the Pigs will suck this yr.

Random thought--Why isn't there a College Sports sub forum on this bored? That's always puzzled me. Yes, I know, we can throw it into the catch-all sports section but seems to me there ought to be a special area. This is shaping up to be the most competitive in many moons..so many elite teams. Anyone could win the "title."

They shouldn't even have a poll until about week 5

When it comes to college football (and I love it as much as anyone else) until they start a playoff system, polls are a worthless way as a means to determine a national championship.

OU is always a toss up.

they get Mizzou at home.

and Tech will prove to be overrated, IMO.

I do think Texas will drop some games, but certainly not all three of those. I think at Kansas will be a tougher one, personally.

Texas will run the table and play in the NC game. They will win that game by 2, scoring a FG with less than a minute to play in the game. 33-31

i wish i could agree with you, but thats not gonna happen without a decent running back

Combine UT's secondary issues with Tech's QB/WR combo and I do not think UT can win that game.

It wouldn't surprise me ayt all for Tech to lose a game or two it shouldn't but it would shock me if that game is against the soft UT secondary.

This is probably the best team Texas Tech has ever had. They returned basically everyone on the team. Still their lack of a running game removes them from the top 10 for me. But I don't think Texas is even top 20 this year.

its the same thing tech fans were saying last year, and they still lost, UT just doesnt lose to tech very often. not saying they wont, but i know there is no way they will lose those three specific games stated earlier

I agree.....That chump, Scott, can burn in buffalo chip hell......watch him have a freakin career day against UT.....I am not one for injuries, but I would love to see the UT defense put a hurtin on him....make him leave the game with a stinger...something that will heal by the end of the weekend.....but also will let him know his place.

Once he signed with CU....I officially went back to hating the Buffs the way I did when they had Stewart, Westbrook, and Salaam.

Had Scott come to UT, we would have trounced the Big 12.

Texas Tech is nothing more than a dingleberry on the crack of Bevo's, well you know.....

ya, that pissed me off too, but i think it had a lot to do with someone in his family being in that program and he is probably gonna milk something out of them. it wouldnt surprise me to find out later that he is getting soemthing shady from them under the table.

in all honesty, they might just be better than us this year, but its not something thats gonna last more than 2 seasons, if they really are better like everyone and their mom is saying.
